Ell-kay

It is quite a difficult name to pronounce for English speakers. Same with Sabine, Ute, Renate.

I like Ell-kay.

Where's it from, somewhere Scandinavian?

A north German/Dutch name meaning noble, kind.

It is a bit old fashioned here in Germany, most Elkes are about 40 - 50 yo.

I have a German friend called Elke, pronounced Ell-kuh, she's not that old, only 33.

Well I will put it on my list to try and kickstart a new generation of baby Elkes in the UK. Not that I'm even pg yet!

Funny, DD2 was nearly Greta.

Ok, she is the exception to the rule

But you know what I mean, all my age group (around 35-45) British women are called Elaine, Audrey, Lynn, Jackie, Linda. In Germany they are Elke, Ute, Tanja, Renate, Susanne...

At the moment popular German girl names are
Leonie
Sofie
Marie
Anna
Lena

and variations of them, Leonie-Sopie, Anna-Marie, Anna-Sofie etc etc.
