Would you use a name that sounded similar to your surname?

TTC but thinking of names. Not giving actual surname, as it’s not very common.

Would you use a name that has a similar ending to your surname or is it too clumsy?

Example:

Luca Barker, both ending in the ‘ca’ sound

Evie Stevens

Mason Jackson

Does it depend on the name, or would you avoid all together? Don’t want it to sound too comic book character ish. Thanks.

*Edited one of the examples as I thought of a name that better put across the point I was trying to make

Depends on the name. Luca barker sounds alright but evie stevens sounds a bit silly

piglet81 · 30/09/2023 12:10

I would avoid… a friend’s child has a name like this (don’t any to say the actual name) and I always think it sounds a bit silly even though the individual names are nice.

CountessKathleen · 30/09/2023 12:17

Avoid. When we were students, a friend of mine doing the school placement part of the equivalent of her PGCE had a disruptive pupil who wrecked her head on a daily basis and was called, incredibly, Riley Kiely.

I also know an Óran Nolan, and have to stop myself calling his Ólan Nolan.

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 30/09/2023 12:21

Nope, my ex wanted to do that because he loved that name but there was no way I would agreed to it.

He said "but it worked for Edward Woodward" and I said "And how famous did he have to become to cope with that name?"

Sleepyquest · 30/09/2023 12:26

No, there was a name I really liked but both names then would have ended in an 'um' sound and so I just couldn't!

daisytumble · 30/09/2023 12:26

Thanks ladies. Another example I guess would be like ‘Rosie Massey’. Different spellings of the last syllable, but the same sound. The first two syllables of the name we like and our surname are entirely different from one another.

It could all be academic as we might end up not having that gender anyway, but it’s such a lovely forename :(

One of my favourite ever girls names shares 5 out of 7 letters with our surname. I was disappointed but the kid has to live with the name their whole lives.

theduchessofspork · 30/09/2023 12:33

No, they all sound daft. Obviously.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 30/09/2023 12:41

It really depends on the names. Logan Morgan - whole "gun" sound repeated, I'd avoid, Katherine Morgan - just the "un" repeated, sounds fine to me.

If it really doesn't work you can save the name for a middle name.

Steev · 30/09/2023 14:03

Without saying the surname what's the first name? Maybe we can make other suggestions

RandomUsernameHere · 30/09/2023 14:21

I decided not to, although I absolutely love a name that ends in the same 2 letters as our surname. I think Rosie Massey looks and sounds fine though. Maybe it's more how it looks written down than how it sounds, I'm not sure.

smallshinybutton · 30/09/2023 14:22

Rosie Massey fine. Kacey Massey - no

FastAndLast · 30/09/2023 14:27

I know someone who named their daughter the first 5 letters of their surname and just added an ‘e’ (didn’t change the pronunciation of the surname by doing that).
I’m not keen 😬

Oh and I knew a Johnny Johnson too at school.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 30/09/2023 19:19

I don’t think most of your examples are an issue. What I would avoid is a surnamey given name which could cause confusion as to which is which, eg Harrison Jackson.

OhMyFriend · 30/09/2023 19:20

No I wouldn’t use any of these names, they all sound ridiculous.

HarpieDuJour · 30/09/2023 19:22

I wouldn't but I know a lot of Donald MacDonalds (Highlands, they are everywhere!) and none of them seems to be bothered by it.

Hunsmet · 30/09/2023 19:23

How are you pronouncing Katherine?

daisytumble · 30/09/2023 19:26

Hunsmet · 30/09/2023 19:23

How are you pronouncing Katherine?

Presumably Kath-run. I would’ve said Kath-rin!

A lot of it is regional I guess.

Hunsmet · 30/09/2023 19:23

"un" isn't exactly right, but it's the closest vowel sound I know how to write. It's a shorter sound than "in", at least when I say it.

PaprikaPlease · 30/09/2023 19:45

I really like Evie Stevens! I’ve always liked a bit of internal rhyme in a name. I wouldn’t name a kid that because it sounds too much like ‘even stevens’ but I like the assonant effect of the vowel sounds so in theory it works for me. Sounds kind of poetic! Other examples would be Meredith Bedford, Alexandra Randalls or Bailey Major.

Don’t like Luca Barker - I have a similarish sounding surname to Barker and avoided any two syllabled ‘a’ ending names. Not keen on Mason Jackson for the same reasons.

So to conclude, I’m a fan of internal rhyme but not keen on matching endings!

User6761 · 30/09/2023 23:41

I think it really depends on accent as to how the name sounds. Luca Barker sounds totally fine in my (Scottish) accent, no rhyme at all.

daisytumble · 04/10/2023 22:01

Thanks everyone this is interesting

I’ve found a close example, I think, without being too outing. Both names end in a ‘ner’ sound.

Think… Luna Warner. Does that sound okay or still silly because of the surnames? Obviously it’s not the same first and surname.

Daffodilwoman · 05/10/2023 12:35

Depends on the names. I thought you were going to say something like David Davies or John Johnson which are both ridiculous.
Completely depends on the sound of the names. So Logan Lowther sounds ok. Donald Ronald doesn’t.

Ivebeentogeorgia · 05/10/2023 12:39

I think Luna Warner and Rosie Massey sound fine. Evie Stevens not so much. I know of 2 sisters named Ella and Ellen Ellis which I think is a bit much

EtiennePalmiere · 05/10/2023 12:59

A close family member has a name like that, no one has ever commented on it and I think it sounds good when he introduces himself. I might be biased though !
