They are both unusual for babies, but I favour Melvyn.

How about you?

LOLOL at LL's friend!

both are supremely old fashioned IMO

Milliways · 05/03/2008 15:48

Twas my reaction WiiMii, but can't say that to Pregnant questionner can I?

I prefer Melvyn, too. But it will always bring to mind the Beatie ads (For BT: the grandson fails all his O-levels except for Sociology. Grandmother Beatie's response was "You got an 'ology? But that means you're a scientist! Ahhh, my grandson the scientist." Melvyn was the grandfather's name.)

moondog · 05/03/2008 15:50

Both awful.
You deserve to be shot if you are going to saddle your poor kid with either of these.

girlfrommars · 05/03/2008 15:54

How about, "I really couldn't decide which I prefer."
Or, "It's so hard to choose , I honestly couldn't say."

girlfrommars · 05/03/2008 16:01

Followed by, "It is so hard to choose isn't it. DH/P and I couldn't choose between X and Y name for our DD/S/future child. He liked X and I thought Y would be better. In the end we found 'insert child's name here' which we both loved!"

Milliways · 05/03/2008 16:03

Wouldn't be worried about other kids with the same name though!

Haven't heard theit female choices

josta · 05/03/2008 16:06

Oooh no, not nice or trendy one bit!

Posey · 05/03/2008 16:06

Prettycandles - omg that is soooo weird. Dh, not 10 minutes ago, was explaining the ology advert to dd. Haven't heard mention of it in years and here we are with you too. That is spooky!!!

Anyway, 'fraid I'm not keen on either name.

JodieG1 · 05/03/2008 16:08

I would say neither.

girlfrommars · 05/03/2008 16:08

Oh God! Is she sure she's not having twins?

totalmisfit · 05/03/2008 16:08

Melvyn could be ironically cool, but only if it's a referenc to The Melvyns who were a grunge band who were best buds with Kurt Cobain. still not great tho'.

PrettyCandles · 05/03/2008 16:08

Doo-noo-noo-noo...doo-noo-noo-noo

That's meant to be the Twilgith Zone theme tune, but it doesn't quite work {grin]

Posey · 05/03/2008 16:11

Twilgith?

suedonim · 05/03/2008 16:31

Noooooo! Suggest Martin or Matthew or Michael or even my grandpa's name, Methusaleh, but not Melvyn or Mervin.

Milliways · 05/03/2008 16:48

Now, Methusaleh is a fab name!

PrettyCandles · 05/03/2008 17:11

I'm playing all the right notes -

just not in the right places.

(Morecambe & Wise)

suedonim · 05/03/2008 17:24

Milliways, my grandpa was always known as 'Meth', and for long enough when I was a child I thought he was named after Methylated Spirit!

Back to the OP - why not suggest Merlin? Just one change of letter makes such a difference, imo!

KateF · 05/03/2008 17:32

My dad was a Mervyn, he loathed it, never used it and made me promise never to name any child of mine after him! Don't thnk Melvyn is any better either. You'll have to be extremely tactful and change the subject asap!

skyatnight · 05/03/2008 18:37

Are they Welsh names?

I used to have my hair cut by someone called Melvyn, or Mel for short. He was very fashionable and fit and cruel-bitchy.

I have two experiences of Mervins. Both were middle-aged friends of my parents. One was dull and took us to an air show, the other had a perm and kept going on about 'the greenie man'?! I don't know what or who the greenie man was but it was meant to be something thrilling/scary (?)

No experiences of Merlins.

Would definitely go with: 'oh...it's so hard to choose, isn't it...?'

Mervyn is terrible.

Merv rhymes with Perv (I had a boyfriend called this when I was 12 and I dumped him for this very reason)

beep · 05/03/2008 19:11

My dads name was Mervyn but he always used his middle name John
