We already have two girls 😬 so struggling with our third now particularly given that both girls have two middle names so we have already used up six of our favourite girls names 😭 this also makes me feel a bit guilty.

One girl has a name ending with an “ee” sound and another has a name ending with an “uh” sound so ideally we’d avoid both of those endings so they don’t sound too matchy matchy. Eldests name is quite unusual (outside top 200) and youngest is ranked about 60th so we also don’t want to go super popular for this one. Ideally I’d like her to be the only one in her class with the name but obviously that can’t be controlled!

Main List so far:
Iris
Florence (love it but probably too popular)
Esme
Olive
Edith
Maeve

Other names that I’ve considered by am less sure about
Ottilie/Ottiliya or variation thereof, maybe too popular, breaks my “no ee” rule
Ffion but we don’t have any welsh roots so feels a bit weird?
Bryony
Margot
Cleo
Cosette
Juniper
Delilah
Flora
Aubrey

Yes
Flora - like it a lot
Iris - fine
Florence - you love it, so do lots of others
Cleo - a bit cat but quite nice
Ffion - like, might get asked if Welsh a lot

No
Bryony - ok but long and a bit Brian-y
Esme - No. Esmay/Ez-me etc
Olive - no, fruit
Edith - no
Maeve - no
Ottilie - no, twee
Ottiliya - weird spelling Otty-lee-ah? Ottilia is better
Margot - likely to be popular, Maggot
Cosette - no
Juniper - no
Delilah - no
Aubrey - boy's name

shoopshoopdedoo · 14/09/2023 19:44

I love all the names on your main list. I really like Maeve but don’t think I’d use it as it seems to be having a moment. I can’t pick a favourite from the others - they are all lovely.

I’m much less keen on your other list. Ffion is nice but I’d avoid if no Welsh connection. I quite like Flora. I dislike the others.

How about Mabel, Josephine, Enid, Louisa, Annabel?

continentallentil · 14/09/2023 19:53

Ffion or Cleo - great names
Flora also very nice

Stella, Cecile, Oona, Lois, Jocelyn, Catrin, Olwen, Gwyneth might be others

Iris - lovely but way over used
Florence (love it but probably too popular)
Esme - fine but way overused, also 2 pronunciations
Olive - it’s a little green thing.
Edith - I love it but way overused
Maeve - it makes me think of mauve and minge (sorry)

Other names that I’ve considered by am less sure about
Ottilie/Ottiliya or variation thereof, maybe too popular, breaks my “no ee” rule - it’s very fussy, and makes me think of Nazis

Ffion but we don’t have any welsh roots so feels a bit weird? - I’d go for it, great name

Bryony - Brian… how about Verity?
Margot - great but super popular
Cleo - really like it
Cosette - sounds like a WW2 hooker, or a pillow brand
Juniper - twee, even on a dog
Delilah - v twee
Flora - really like
Aubrey - it’s a blokes name. Audrey is alright

Marsyas · 14/09/2023 19:54

My favourites of your list are Esme, Briony (but with an I) , Margot and Edith.
Flora, Iris, Florence - wouldn’t use myself but nothing wrong with them.
Not keen on Aubrey, (but love Audrey,) Cosette, Delilah, Juniper, Olive, Ottilie, Cleo, Ffion or Maeve

Yirk · 14/09/2023 19:55

From your list Florence is my preferred one.

Jasperdale · 14/09/2023 19:57

Bryony is very pretty and I don’t think of Brian at all! That’s my favorite. Then Florence and Maeve

hohumpigsbum · 14/09/2023 20:01

I like Briony (with an i as PP said), Cleo and Juniper

Spottytoddler · 14/09/2023 20:17

Thank you hmmm no strong consensus jumping out at the moment!

In response to some other suggestions:

Like Gwyneth but close family members name
Also like Olwen but good friend has literally just had a baby called this
I like Mabel but DH says it’s a cats name 🙄
I also really like both Annabel and Alice but DH says no because he has an ex called Annie which is too close to Annabel apparently 🤷‍♀️ And he says we can’t have Alice because of the song “who the F** is Alice”. Honestly.

Im not overly keen on any of the other suggestions apart from Cecile but it’s maybe a bit fussy with our (double barrelled) surname. I quite like Cecy for a nickname. I like Francesca with nickname Cesca but I’m worried she’d end up Fran or Franny which I’m really not keen on.

Mabli is popular in Wales. I don't think Mabel is a cat's name but pets seem to get human names these days.

FoodFann · 14/09/2023 20:24

I like Florence, Flora and Juniper

Spottytoddler · 14/09/2023 20:26

Did also consider Marlow but I don’t think it really goes well with our other girls names which are a bit more “classic” sounding although unusual

Other random options that I’ve toyed with

Honour
Pippa but apparently means blowjob in Swedish? 🤷‍♀️ might use as a middle name
Love Ivy but it’s too popular and three friends have girls called Ivy
Lydia? Too 90s?
I like Poet but DH says it’s weird which I kind of get. I just think it’s a lovely sound and a nice meaning. He thinks it makes us sound like we knit our own carrots.
Like Verity but too close to eldests name

OP posts:
Spottytoddler · 14/09/2023 20:27

And Marigold but also slightly twee

KnickerlessParsons · 14/09/2023 20:30

Iris - nice but quite popular
Florence - nice but quite popular
Esme - not keen
Olive - bitter green fruit so no (and Olive from On the Buses)
Edith - lovely
Maeve - not keen
Ottilie/Ottiliya - horrible
Ffion - lovely but only if you have Welsh connections
Bryony - nice
Margot - no
Cleo - lovely
Cosette - too French
Juniper - awful
Delilah - awful
Flora - nice
Aubrey - boys' name. What about Audrey

martinisforeveryone · 14/09/2023 20:34

This is random, but comes from reading your thoughts and posts OP. Have you ever thought about Carys?

It's Welsh origin but doesn't sound too exclusively Welsh. It means 'love' so what's not to like?

Spottytoddler · 14/09/2023 20:47

@martinisforeveryone YES I love Carys! However we live in a very non-Welsh area (not quite Essex but along those lines) and I think a lot of people around here wouldn’t have heard of it and would actually pronounce it Care-EESE instead of Cariss. I have similar worries about Margot and think people may say Mar-GOT

Spottytoddler · 14/09/2023 20:55

God I’ve remembered even more names that I like but have vetoed for various reasons (mainly DH 🙄)

Tabitha
Matilda (might use as middle name)
Rosalind - LOVE this one with no Rosa and am v sad that I can’t use it
Violet

Theres so many girls names I like but just can’t settle on one that feels right or isn’t on the “no” list for one of about a million reasons. We have big families and I have a fickle DH 😒

PearlRuby · 14/09/2023 20:56

Absolutely love Marigold! What about Cecily?

Hazelnut9 · 14/09/2023 20:57

Yes

Iris
Florence
Edith
Cleo
Juniper
Delilah
Flora

No

Esme
Olive
Maeve
Ottilie
Ffion
Bryony
Margot
Cosette
Aubrey

ladygindiva · 14/09/2023 21:01

Delilah, Iris, Flora and Florence are my faves, in that order. You have names on your list ( Esme for instance) that are way more popular than Florence imo.

wishing3 · 14/09/2023 21:02

Rosamund?
Ramona
Romilly
Miranda

martinisforeveryone · 14/09/2023 21:04

@Spottytoddler I get your point, but in reality, I don't think pronunciation of Carys or Margot is that much of an issue beyond correcting it just a few times.

That said, I'm really biased as they're two names I love and I'd happily do any battling that I needed to do.

Margot is popular though where I live, so I'd probably prefer Cleo.

Whatever you choose, enjoy your new little one.

orangetriangle · 14/09/2023 21:08

Clementine
Liberty
Savannah
Tallulah
Camilla
juliette
Names with similar type of vibe?

How about Charis instead? It's pronounced the same way but is Greek for grace/kindness/life.

wherethedevildontgo · 14/09/2023 21:12

Iris - ok, makes me think of the eye
Florence (love it but probably too popular) - love, don't think it's that popular?
Esme - bit old lady like for me
Olive - love, probably my favourite
Edith - very old lady like
Maeve - cute and trendy

Other names that I’ve considered by am less sure about
Ottilie/Ottiliya or variation thereof, maybe too popular, breaks my “no ee” rule - never been a fan, not sure why, feels like a bit of a mouthful?
Ffion but we don’t have any welsh roots so feels a bit weird? - is this pronounced Fee-on? If so, yes like it but agree would be a bit weird if you aren't Welsh
Bryony - like it
Margot - not a fan
Cleo - really like this, but the car thing makes me favour other names
Cosette - sounds like casette
Juniper - no, planet
Delilah - love but quite popular? (I wouldn't care but you do)
Flora - like it but margarine
Aubrey - too American for me

Don't officially know how popular the girls names are as I have boys just my experience

bossybloss · 14/09/2023 21:13

I like a few soft sounding names , Louisa, Esme, Emily, Esther, Maisie,Daisy.
