Is Hope too Short?

Could we hyphenate it with something else (open to suggestions!!)? Open to any suggestions really!

We're really struggling with names for DD2.

DD1 we decided on really early and never wavered, she is Natalie Christine, known as Tilly by friends and family.

We cannot decide on DD2 at all. Choices we have had so far are:

  • Isobel/Isabelle - but I'm not too keen due to the popularity of it, I like that Tilly will likely be the only Natalie, but it's also 'common' enough that everyone knows how to spell it if that makes sense!
  • Megan - DH not sold on this one as he prefers Isabelle as he isn't bothered about popularity.

Middle name is either Ellen or Adelaide (family names) which neither of us are keen to use as first names.

So anyway, the main point. Our last name is one syllable (think Smith, it's that common too) and I'm unsure if a single syllable first name doesn't quite sound right, so was thinking of potentially hyphenating Hope to make it slightly longer, but no idea what to hyphenate it with!

If you've read through this ramble and have any suggestions at all, hyphenated or completely different, I'd be all ears and very appreciative!

Hope is lovely. I think hyphenated names sound like they are going line dancing.

Smittenkitchen · 14/09/2023 09:40

I wouldn't hyphenate it. I think it's a beautiful pure name and would sound quite snappy with a single syllable surname. Especially as you have a middle name in there too. It's by far my favourite of all the names you suggest and a lovely message in the times we are living in.

YouHoooo · 14/09/2023 09:47

I really like it. Don’t hyphenate!

DuploTrain · 14/09/2023 09:48

Hope is lovely, I like a one syllable name.

I really don’t like hyphenated names though.

TotalOverhaul · 14/09/2023 09:50

Don't hyphenate. What about Hope Elodie as that is a sort of blend of letters from Ellen and Adelaide

RosaElize · 14/09/2023 13:29

Love Hope and it is so underused ad a first name - Use it!

Beamur · 14/09/2023 13:30

It's fine as it is.

JackGeller · 14/09/2023 13:49

I have a Hope, she does have a middle name but it’s not hyphenated. But I love her name x

MerryChristmasToYou · 14/09/2023 15:16

It's fine. Do not hyphenate it.

Hope-Ellen and Hope-Adelaide sound like Ho-Pellen and Ho-Paddle-aid

bloodyeffinnora · 14/09/2023 15:18

I also love the name Hope

QueeniePlumtree · 14/09/2023 19:13

No to hyphenating (my name is hyphenated, eugh!!)

Love Hope!

Hyderu means to hope/trust in Welsh.

MerryChristmasToYou · 14/09/2023 19:31

You wouldn't call a child 'To Hope' or 'To Trust'

Hyderu is similar to hope in that it is the corresponding word for hope/trust that is also both a noun and a verb as it is in English. Other synonyms are masculine nouns.

The usual girls name would be Caergwrle but that’s a mouthful and there’s a castle by that name so not ideal.

JennyForeigner · 14/09/2023 19:44

Hope is beautiful. Lovely name all on it's own.

DesTeeny · 14/09/2023 19:44

GuanYinShanxi · 14/09/2023 19:23

Hyderu means to hope/trust in Welsh.

Well now this might just be an option as FIL and family are Welsh!

Thank you.

I’ve no idea how you pronounce Hyderu but what about Heidi Adelaide? I think they flow nicely, and like Natalie it’s a known name but there’s not likely to be lots of them around.

MerryChristmasToYou · 14/09/2023 19:51

@GuanYinShanxi , it's not a noun, it's a verb. The noun is 'hyder','ffydd'' or 'ymddriedaith' (trust), or 'gobaith' (hope)
Live in Hope, die in Caergwrle, as they say.

Sorry. I was going by Gweiadur. I’m not a fluent speaker.

"The usual girls name would be Caergwrle but that’s a mouthful"

I think this poster is definitely pulling your leg. Caergwrle is a village

MerryChristmasToYou · 14/09/2023 19:55

@LaundryWoes , Huh-derry (or thereabouts), and it's a verb. 'I hope' is 'Rwy'n hyderu' or ' Rwy'n gobeithio'. It's not a name.

Ffydd would be a pretty name, but I don't think it is a name. Hedd (Peace) is a boy's name.

continentallentil · 14/09/2023 19:55

Hope Adelaide is lovely

Never hyphenate, it is ghastly

hohumpigsbum · 14/09/2023 19:59

Personally I don't think Natalie and Hope "go" together. I know siblings aren't clumped together all the way through life but some people do like to give their children similar types of names.

I think Isabelle Hope is lovely and a more similar style.

hohumpigsbum · 14/09/2023 19:59

You could always have Fizz as a nickname as well!
