What do people think of Nye for a boy? We’re absolutely stuck for boys names.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Roselilly36 · 09/09/2023 17:52

Only ever known Nye as a surname, so I wouldn’t chose it as a first name.

CurlewKate · 09/09/2023 18:42

I do think you have to be Welsh.

Buttercupsdaisiesdandelions · 09/09/2023 22:35

I like it because I associate it with Nye Bevan. I'd assume that a Nye was actually an Aneurin though.

DramaAlpaca · 09/09/2023 22:41

My friend has a Neirin who goes by Nye.

AlexaCanYouHearMe · 09/09/2023 22:42

No.

Whichwhatnow · 09/09/2023 22:45

I like it written down.

Said out loud there's a serious risk that people will assume it's Ni, short for Nigel (my dad's name/nickname)😅

lazysummer · 09/09/2023 23:49

Love it. It’s my grandson’s name.

this. I know a little nye.

Doveyouknow · 09/09/2023 23:59

Love it though I would have the full name and use Nye as a nickname.

CCTVcity · 09/09/2023 23:59

Love it, but as a short name. Should have a a full name too
.

MissBattleaxe · 09/09/2023 11:12

It's short fro Aneurin so maybe call him that with Nye as a nickname. It's a lovely name and a nod to the incredible man who created the NHS.

i have a friend who called her son aneurin and Nye for short. she's a wonderful socialist but has absolutely no welsh connection at all and is from a heritage as far removed from britain as possible.

i wish i'd have called one of my boys this. i just wasn't clever enough to think of it.

HoliHormonalTigerLillyTheSecond · 10/09/2023 09:45

It looks like new years eve and when said out loud, it it sounds like a northern Irish person saying "no"

I wouldn't use it.

HoliHormonalTigerLillyTheSecond · 10/09/2023 09:46

hoophoophooray · 09/09/2023 11:33

I know a 10yo Aneurin who goes by Nye. I really like it

Yes and the long form reminds me of the word aneurysm.

Sorry.

Whinge · 09/09/2023 11:09

I thought this was going to be a post about New Years Eve, so on that basis it would be a no from me. 🤣

This!

HoliHormonalTigerLillyTheSecond · 10/09/2023 09:46

AntiHop · 09/09/2023 16:29

Aneurin was a serious contender if dd2 had been a boy. But I had wondered if it was OK without any Welsh heritage.

Who's opinion did you think mattered in this regard?

continentallentil · 10/09/2023 09:52

Short for Aneurin yes, not on it’s own though - Nye no nay nope - it’s little known and does sound like someone saying No in a a strong NI accent as PP says. So he might prefer Aneurin in some contexts when he’s older.

BattleofBeamfleot · 10/09/2023 10:19

I like it. I only know one Nye I worked with years ago (who must be nearly 30 now!), so for me it's associated as a name for a smart, capable and hardworking young man.

EggbertHeartsTina · 10/09/2023 15:54

Same @AntiHop . I wanted the name Aneurin for DS2 but am not Welsh (well, a tenuous 16th Welsh I think) so I didn't think I could use it.

Why not? Who would care?!

EggbertHeartsTina · 10/09/2023 17:05

You’re right @LetMeEnfoldYou but I wussed out… I was worried most people in my social network wouldn’t recognise it if they weren’t Welsh / didn’t know the origins of the NHS! I went with Ambrose which is arguably equally “out there” 😂

Same 🤣🤣

CoalTit · 10/09/2023 17:29

I assumed any British child named Nye would be named for Aneurin Bevan, but I see from the comments here that a lot of people don't know of him, so you and your son would spend his life explaining to the ignorant.
Is that a good thing or a bad thing? British people should all know who Nye Bevan was, but should your son be lumped with the job of educating them?

Still a cool name though!

Annaishere · 10/09/2023 17:31

It’s cool. You could call him ‘night’ as a nickname. Cute

Daisybuttercup12345 · 10/09/2023 18:10

Another for New Year's Eve.
Perhaps Niall? Or Nigel might be due a comeback.
