I don't think she was a badass; she was a nasty piece of work.

Her husband played around but she couldn't punish him because he was king of the gods so she meted it out awful punishments to the young women that Zeus had seduced/raped.

She was nasty but she was also a strong woman of the time and goddess of women and childbirth. A lot of the gods and goddesses were a bit evil.
