Name with negative meaning

IvyMae222 · 26/08/2023 18:33

My partner and I have chosen and love the name we have chosen for our unborn son and have our hearts set on it.
We looked up the name meaning later on and found out what it means.

The name sounds similar to my name as well as my mother's name but not too similar that it detracts from individuality.

There are a couple positive meanings to the name but the most popular isn't.

What I'm wondering is if we go ahead with naming our son this name, would it be selfish even though our choosing has nothing to do with the origin meaning? I've tried to think of alternatives but no other names feel right now and it was the only name we both agreed on.

Thanks heaps in advance!

Is it an obvious negative meaning, eg Satan, or do you need to really look into the name, eg Thomas means idiot in Greek (I made that up)?

MidnightOnceMore · 26/08/2023 18:38

Depends how well known the negative meaning is.

KirstenBlest · 26/08/2023 18:39

It depends on the name. If the name is one where most people will think of a negative meaning, then avoid it. For example, something like Dick isn't really going to be great now even though it was fine 70 yrs ago.

Riverlee · 26/08/2023 18:39

Most people don’t routinely look up the meaning of names, so I shouldn’t worry. Cameron means Crooked Nose, and yet I know several. Jonah is associated with being a bad name amongst sailors, but it doesn’t stop people naming their child Jonah.

If it feels right, then it is right.

cherryassam · 26/08/2023 18:40

I think like the PPs it depends if it’s a well known negative meaning or not - if you didn’t know until you looked it up then it can’t be universally known

Changethetoner · 26/08/2023 18:41

Names often have more than one "meaning". It might be "big chin" in one language, but "strong" in another.

I only know the "meaning" of my own name because I looked it up. I certainly don't know the meaning or meanings of most names. It is a thing that new parents focus on, but to be honest, nobody (else) cares. Call the baby what you want.

IvyMae222 · 26/08/2023 18:41

No, not an evil name meaning.
The name we chose means Sadness, Sorrowful, Tumult and Melancholy as the most popular meanings but Fierce and Bold as the less popular meanings.
I'm pregnant and our bub has made me happier than I thought possible so the negative name meaning doesn't reflect our feelings towards him.

Is it Tristan? If so I wouldn’t worry, nobody associates it with sadness. It’s a used (but not overused) name.

Mamette · 26/08/2023 18:54

If it’s Tristan I think it’s actually of Welsh root and not French (or Latin or whatever) and more likely to mean “the screaming / shouting one” which is apt in the case of the one I know 😂

I looked into this previously, I will try to find the source of the above.

IvyMae222 · 26/08/2023 18:56

Yes it is! 😊
I knew about Tristan and Isolde but I didn't actually know what it meant E.g Triste in French etc. What I worry about is him one day looking up his name and possibly being hurt by it or if anyone bullies him for it. Sound wise I absolutely love it. My partner isn't fussed about the name meaning, it's just me being me I guess lol.

Actually I have no idea which of the 10 million online articles I got that from, I’m sure you have also read all of those anyway OP.

HamishTheCamel · 26/08/2023 18:58

Tristan is fine OP. Don't worry no one will know or care about those meanings!

Mamette · 26/08/2023 18:58

Definitely go for it if it’s the one you love!

MidnightOnceMore · 26/08/2023 18:58

Tristan is fine, IMO

IvyMae222 · 26/08/2023 18:59

Hahaha! 😂 I hope you mean screaming by being loud and enthusiastic lol
I have close Welsh heritage so I think I would prefer that name meaning over the French one.

Thank you 😊

Name meanings become meaningless once a child is called them, they just sort of become the child.

Friggingfrog · 26/08/2023 19:02

Don’t worry op. My dd is called leah which means weary or tired or cow on some websites 😂

Createausernametoday · 26/08/2023 19:03

if you have to question it , don’t do it

Olika · 26/08/2023 19:08

I would't worry about it. Love Tristan.

TheInterceptor · 26/08/2023 19:09

One of mine is a Tristan - great name!

KirstenBlest · 26/08/2023 19:18

The welsh baby name sites tend to have a lot of rubbish on them. Either the name might be a random noun or adjective, or under the wrong list, or names that might be Irish or something. The meanings are often made up.

The Welsh word for sad is Trist. There are many Welsh words that are the same or similar in Welsh and French. e.g. Pont.

FWIW I know a Tristan and a Trystan, and don't associate the name with sadness or grief.
Trystan is the Welsh spelling.

Valerie23 · 26/08/2023 19:18

Tristan is a lovely name. I know an absolutely lovely young man with that name.

toastofthetown · 26/08/2023 19:29

I don’t place any value on name meanings. A lot of names are so old that the meanings have altered or become obfuscated throughout the years. And even if the names did derive from unfortunate etymological origins, they're very far removed from the original derivation as time has gone on. Tristan is popular enough, and with enough pop culture references that the meaning is irrelevant.

For me, if a name has a nice meaning, that's a bonus but it's not even close to a dealbreaker if the meaning is bad.

pimplebum · 26/08/2023 19:31

You are being totally daft !
Of course he isn't going to be hurt or bullied due to obscure meaning of name

user1492757084 · 27/08/2023 06:50

Tristan is sweet.
