I know I'm probably going to regret this but... which of these Spanish names for a boy?

I have 2 DDs and they both have Spanish names, so we want DS to have one too. It's almost more important that it can be pronounced right in Spain where they're less used to foreign names. I find that in England most people are used to them and make an effort. So which of these names do you like best or think would be least of a problem in terms of pronunciation, etc.

Pablo
Raul
Teo (pronounced TEH-oh)
Edu
Nico
Ruben
none of them?
any other suggestions?

Please be gentle...

De nada..
Manu is also a figure in Hindi mythology who is very similar to the christian Noah (but yes, I got it from Manu Chao!)

Spanish friends tell me it's a little old fashioned and that these days Manolo is used more.

Sidge · 02/03/2008 20:58

Teo is nice.

My friend has a Luis, and I had a teenage romance with a Javier who was gorgeous

vacaloca · 02/03/2008 20:59

Oh god, that reminds me my sister has been calling this bump Manolo since day one. Unfortunately we've been having quite a lot of work done to a house we own in Spain and the builder is called Manolo and I just keep thinking of him every time she mentions Manolo. Manu is much cooler though. And I like the connection to Hindi mythology (via Manu Chao). Right, off to ask DH what he thinks. He's going to tell me to p**s off and call this child Louis instead.

I have a Mateo and a Cruz. I also love Joaquin and Diego as names.

MaryAnnSingleton · 02/03/2008 21:24

Teo !

1066andallthat · 02/03/2008 21:27

So, what about Samuel or Jose? Boys I teach at the mo' are: Juan, Manuel, Alonso, Rodrigo, Jaime, Emilio, Jose, Ruben, Jorge, Daniel (that crosses the boundaries well), Pablo, David (so popular as names go that he always adds his surname), Joel, Diego, Gabriel, Alvaro, Elias, Gonzalo, Carlos (renamed Charlie by everyone - he is one!), Adrian. My DSs' friends are Rodolfo and Mateo. The cheekiest boy in DS1's class is a Marcos.

CantSleepWontSleep · 02/03/2008 21:28

Definitely Pablo for ease of pronunciation.

If your spellings are correct for the Spanish version, then avoid Ruben and Raul, as in the UK we'd expect to spell them differently.

vacaloca · 02/03/2008 21:32

Mateo is also a good option. 1066, I assume you live in Spain, otherwise that's an interesting classroom! I want to avoid names that would be pronounced differently by me and everyone else (like David, Daniel). Cantsleep, good point about the spellings of Raul and Ruben.

I love, love, love Nico. was a strong contender for ds2

violetskies · 02/03/2008 21:38

I really like Teo and Nico.

katebrithdir · 02/03/2008 21:52

Why not Rafael - such a cute name . . . We had the same issue with girls names - went for Josefina (now Josie as we are in the UK), sadly thought that truly spanish names might be a bit much if we weren't there, though I still love Maria del Mar & Rocio . . .

scottishmummy · 02/03/2008 22:02

xavier

Sarahjct · 03/03/2008 19:15

My friend has just had a Rico. Had never heard it before but really like it.

scottishmummy · 04/03/2008 13:39

rico is gorgeous name my friend has a wee boy called this

kitsmummy · 04/03/2008 14:56

Yes, like Rico and like Cruz a lot too. Always did like Cruz, even when everyone was slating the Beckhams. Of the original list, I like Nico best, I think

vacaloca · 04/03/2008 15:04

Well, Rico means Rich, which is very inappropriate in our case! And Cruz is a girl's name unfortunately.

Love Teo - not too difficult to pronounce, surely?
Like Luca too

mom2latinoboys · 04/03/2008 15:25

I don't think Cruz is strictly a girls name. Anyone with that name that I've known has always been a boy. It may be a cultural thing though.

mom2latinoboys · 04/03/2008 15:25

If it is poor ds2.

scottishmummy · 04/03/2008 18:49

Cruz is for boy or girl. V uncommon prior to Beckhams wee boy

Astrophe · 04/03/2008 18:54

I love Manu, Mateo, Luca.

Will you tell us what your DD's names are? Or can I crash your thread and ask for Spanish girls names? My DD has a Spanish name, so I like the idea of future DD having one too, but am yet to see any I really like...

vacaloca · 05/03/2008 14:19

DD1 is Natalia. DD2 has a bizarre name from a very specific area of Spain.

LynetteScavo · 05/03/2008 14:22

Pablo is fabulous.

Soph73 · 05/03/2008 15:08
