Is Ella common now?

Recently read a thread about the name Olivia (asking if it is very common now) and wondering the same about the name Ella? What are your thoughts?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

It’s a beautiful name. I think it’s classy. Not common, but certainly not unusual.

OopsieeDaisy · 23/07/2023 01:14

I agree, Ella is a nice name - not overly common but not unusual. I think the Olivia post was regarding whether it’s common in terms of being ‘rough’ or ‘not posh’ which I definitely don’t think Ella is!

RubyWedding · 23/07/2023 01:14

Yes, very commonly used.

therainycamper · 23/07/2023 01:17

I know 5 from DD friends and extended. It is a pretty name though.

SueVineer · 23/07/2023 01:27

Yes, very common at the moment. But nice name

ADHDat43 · 23/07/2023 01:31

Soooo many Ellas!

BungleandGeorge · 23/07/2023 01:34

Yes common, both as a name and as a shortening. Has been for quite a number of years although I think popularity might be dropping

myveryownelectrickitten · 23/07/2023 01:40

My DD is 10. There are absolutely loads of Ellas at her school. My niece is 16 and there are tons around her age too!

It’s a pretty name, but sadly I don’t think it’s currently an “upmarket” one, if that’s what you really want to know.

Lily0719 · 23/07/2023 03:08

I prefer Elle, little more unique and just as pretty and classy :)

marshmallowfinder · 23/07/2023 04:11

Tons of them, but I do prefer Fenella, with the option of the nickname Ella if she wishes.

Which names are 'upmarket'?!

MerryChristmasToYou · 23/07/2023 07:45

It's the #20 most popular name in England & Wales and has been in the top 20 for over 20 years. Add to that the number of girls/women who use Ella as a diminutive of names like Arabella, Gabriella, Eleanor, etc, and all the Ellies/El- names, then yes it's very popular.

@Lily0719 , you can't have 'more unique' - either something is unique or not.

Lily0719 · 23/07/2023 07:46

@MerryChristmasToYou ahh you’re one of those. Have a great day.

MerryChristmasToYou · 23/07/2023 08:11

And you're one of those, @Lily0719 . I commented because Elle is even more boring than Ellie and Ella.

user64827777 · 23/07/2023 08:13

Yes, it's common

TheYearOfSmallThings · 23/07/2023 08:13

There are loads but it's still a nice name.

Lily0719 · 23/07/2023 08:22

@MerryChristmasToYou as are you.

continentallentil · 23/07/2023 08:30

It’s very common - also because lots of the Elizabeth / Eloise / Eleanor / Helena / Isabellas etc etc are known as Ella/Ellie/Elle

Erm, I don’t think Elle is ‘classy’ as a full name, rather the opposite. Fine as a nn obviously.

Lily0719 · 23/07/2023 08:37

@continentallentil fortunately we all have different views on names :)

RoseRows · 23/07/2023 08:40

Nice name but very popular

TheNameIsDickDarlington · 23/07/2023 08:44

Very common. I have an Ella and in her class there's another Ella, a Bella, an Isabella, two isabelles and a Belle. So there's very much a similar type of name that makes it feel even more popular to me.

I agree, especially when it gets pronounced as Ehwh, with no 'l' at all!

RandomUsernameHere · 23/07/2023 08:51

I've only ever met one so to me it seems underused. I think it's a lovely name.

Thatbloomindog · 23/07/2023 09:02

Absolutely beautiful name.
I do know masses of them though, ranging from babies up to around 18 years old. And someone who is in their nineties
