Is Ella common now?

Recently read a thread about the name Olivia (asking if it is very common now) and wondering the same about the name Ella? What are your thoughts?

It's the most common name where we live in the age 7 to 10 age group.

Yes loads at school.

I find it dull and it’s one of those names that’s always paired with Rose/Grace/May, the filler middle names for girls.

My Ella is 20. Her best friend is Ella and she’s 21. I know a couple of younger ones. DH cousins DD is Ella (older and live in a different country) We don’t know too many. DD loves her name. Named after Ella Fitzgerald.

Currently the no.1 name for girls in Denmark.

It’s a bit of a nothing name, popular though.

Pretty much all of the names Ella can be a diminutive for, are nicer by far.

I know more little Ella's than I do Olivia. Buy I much prefer Ella

Ella itself isn't particularly common IMO, but when you combine it with other similar names like Ellie / Bella etc then they are common as a group of names IYSWIM.

There are 610 students in our local high school. 611 of them are called Ella.

I'll say the the rise in the popularity of Ella properly started about 20-25 years ago.

Before that, @peaceinourtime . It's been in the top 20 most used name since 2001, and that's not counting the names it can be short for, or all the Ellies.

It is very popular, as a quick look at the stats will show. Most of the ones I know are aged 10-20 so it feels to me like it peaked then. But it's still a top 20 name.

I don’t think it has peaked yet, in my GD’s nursery class there are 3. So these are aged between 2 and 3, out of 15 children 3 have the same name.

Depends on whether you mean common as in "frequently used" or common as in "déclassé".

I think names starting with E are generally very popular. We have lots of Ella, Evie, Edie, Eliza, Elsie and the odd Eleanor and Emma.

I work with under 5s and haven't heard of any Ellas recently. I only know two, one is 13 and one is 34!

I’m related to an Ella and I work in a school and I only know one Ella. I prefer that to Olivia
