Baby names

What do you think of the name Freddie?

After months of deliberation, DH and I have decided to call our baby Frederick but will shorten it to Freddie day to day. His middle name has to be Alexander as it is a family thing.

Anyway, I've made the mistake of telling a few people and am really surprised at the number of them who absolutely hate it (and are so keen to tell me so ). I didn't think it was that controversial to be honest. Just looking for some reassurance that it isn't awful I suppose.

I am not keen on the name but it has made a bit of a comeback, be prepared for it to be shortened to Fred though

I think it is a great name. But then it is my son's middle name so I might be biased.

I like it. I think the Frederick/Freddie conbination manages to be both grand and friendly.

It's a nice name and it's a good idea to have the full version on his birth cert, for the future. btw, what will his initials be? I ask, because a vowel in the middle can be problematic...

I love it. It reminds me of (Andrew) Freddie Flintoff, one of my favourite cricketers.

It's very rude to tell someone you don't like their choice of name ... and I've never found it to be controversial any way. There are quite a few round my way

Go for it! It's brill.

I like Freddie, but would expect it to get shortened to Fred as the child got older.

Freddie is cute on a little boy, but on a man?

I like the idea of giving him the full version, then he can choose which he wants to go by as he gets older.

It's becoming increasingly popular and is quite a posh name I think (based on people I know who have chosen it, Freddie Windsor etc). As you've made your mind up, it might be better to wait until the birth until you announce it as hopefully people won't be quite so rude then.

I think it works on a man too. It makes me think of that rather rakish character in The Talented Mr Ripley. In fact, I think it's a 1005 excellent name. Not quite enough to make me want to get pregant again but close.
