'Formal ' versions of Evie...or any other ideas?

I'm due in 6 weeks and don't know whether having a boy or a girl. We've decided on a boy's name we both like but are stuck for a girl's name.

I really like the name Evie (though i think it's a bit more popular than i'd like) but would rather give her a more 'formal' version and use Evie as a nickname. I had thought of Evelyn (pronounced Eve-lin) but am worried that that spelling/pronunciation is the male version of the name (as in Evelyn Waugh). Also my MIL's best friend has that name and she's a bit sour faced so my husband's less keen on it. Does anyone have any suggestions?

We had sort of decided on Lucy but a friend has recently used that name so having to re-think.

Also any other suggestions for nice, normal, not overly popular names for girls? Sorry, i'm being lazy, but have spent the last 34 weeks (and the rest) thinking about this and am getting fed up with it!

I prefer 'Ever-lin' to 'Eve-lin' myself.

Solveig could maybe be shortened to Evie too.

CrushWithEyeliner · 25/02/2008 19:50

Evania

pollyblue · 25/02/2008 20:26

I'd vote for Eve or Eva.
Nice normal but not too popular names...hmmmm....how about

Rebecca
Rachel
Helen/Helena
Lydia
Mia
Claire
Sarah
Nicole
Anna
Eliza/Elizabeth
Ka tharine

I really like the name Evie. A friend of mine has called her baby this, hyphenated with May. It s really pretty.

I like Eve or Eva too. They could be used on their own as well, and then Evie as a pet name.

BigBadMouse · 25/02/2008 20:42

My niece is an Evie, short for Evelyn. Lots of people have commented on how nice a name it is.

Evelyn is a unisex name but has been far more common for girls for quite a while I think. Bit of a problem about MILs best friend though I guess.

How you considered Edith - which is often shortened to Edie?

or Emily / Emilia which could be shorted Emi?

Our next DD would have been Megan.

evie99 · 25/02/2008 20:48

Immy is a sweet abbreviation for Imogen.

GodzillasRockinRollinBumcheek · 25/02/2008 20:52

What about Genevieve, and using Evie as a shorter version of that?

3madboys · 25/02/2008 20:59

i think Genevieve is a nice name, we had it on our list for a girl, but are having a boy. and we would have used evie as a shortened version.

aslo Evangeline, i know a little girl, well she is about 8 now, called that, she gets called Evie and she is lovely

RedJools · 25/02/2008 21:02

Our Evie is just Evie- says so on her birth certificate! But we call her Shneivel (??), Eves, Evester...

silver28 · 26/02/2008 08:36

Thank you all so much for your suggestions. I'm still thinking of Evelyn (if i can persuade DH) but Eve may be a good alternative. Edith is lovely too.

Thanks again - this is the first time i've ever posted and i'm amazed at the response!

Eve or Eva (prefer ee-va, not eh-va) are both beautiful, classic names in my opinion. Evangelina is beautiful, too (I know greek girl with this name).

seeker · 26/02/2008 11:16

Evadne?

But why not just Eve?

littlemissturquoise · 02/03/2008 08:17

This is so weird - you and I are having a similar experience, silver28. I am due in 7 weeks, you in 6 weeks, and, like you, we are very much decided on our boy's name, but are still struggling with our girl's name. I was out last night at a Hen Night and came back to DH who said he liked Evie. He had been watching a DVD whilst I was out and the character was Evie (actually spelt EVEY). He said he thought Mae/May would go well with it.

This morning, when I got up, I was thinking that if we go for it, we should have a longer, more formal name and then just shorten it to Evie/Evey, which is what you were thinking too! I had been thinking of Evangeline, as I once babysat a little girl called that and it was so pretty. I also have a good friend and collegue who is Evelyn and I really like that name as well.

Spooky how people can think along the same lines as you!

We are also thinking of Emily, Darcey, Isobel and Ophelia, with Elizabeth or Anne as middle names.

silver28 · 02/03/2008 19:45

how strange littlemissturquiose! I don't suppose you live anywhere near lancaster?! would laugh if it turned out we'd been sat in same antenatal classes!

Anyway, i'm not sure that my husband can be convinced abut Evie - or any of the many versions that people have suggested.

I am definitely coming round to the name Edith (shortened to Edie) though, which someone suggested on here. I don't want to sound pretentious, or like i'm deliberately looking for an 'old lady' name that i know are so popular now, but i do love the sound of Evie/Edie, and they go well with our surname.

By the way littlemissturquoise, the boys name we like is Finlay James (to shorten to Fin) - again, sounds right with our surname. I thought we'd go for something more traditional, and i know Finlay is fairly common now, but it's just a name with both agreed on quite quickly and it seems to have stuck. I was curious to know what boy's name you have chosen, given our similar circumstances, though completely understand if you want to keep it to yourself! i'm avoiding telling 'real life' people our choice in case they put me off it.

evangeline- gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous !

violetskies · 03/03/2008 10:24

Evelyn or Genevieve are the two I like best. Lots of Evelyn's in my family, we pronounce my Evelyn's .... as Ev Lyn though

Ledodgy · 03/03/2008 10:26

We have an Eve it's a sweet name and we felt it was cute enough to carry her through childhood and classic enough for adulthood.

littlemissturquoise · 03/03/2008 19:49

silver28 - Edith is really nice and no, I am not in the Lancaster area, unfortunately, or we could have met up! Our boy's choice is Eli Michael. I know what you mean about the last name - you have to think about that when choosing your Christian name. Our last name begins with an E and so we like first names which begin with E too!

Since I last posted, we are now decided on Evangeline, shortened to Evie, well, until we change it again! I won't be surprised if we do have to go back to the drawing board with regards to our girl's name. However, I do really like both Evangeline and Evie (my DH still wants to spell it Evey but I am not sure about that!)

We have not told anyone our names in RL, but my mum keeps dropping hints as to names she likes for girls. I think that nobody would dare say that they did not like a name once you have had the baby, but whilst you are still expecting, they may say they don't like it, which would be very embarrassing for everyone involved!

Rosbo · 04/03/2008 18:08

Genevieve and vivienne are lovely names, vivienne makes me think of vivienne westwood. Bearing in mind if you used Genevieve they could be called jenny for short, which is also nice but not what you wanted. And Vivienne they could be called Viv or Vivvy. I know an Evie that is just called Evie, its a nice name in itself.

Eve · 04/03/2008 18:11

Personally.... I think Eve's a great name.

Boco · 04/03/2008 18:12

I have an Evie. Her full name is Evil Knievel.

hotbot · 04/03/2008 18:50

no sorry yuo cant have Eve, that is dds and there can only be one....
