Baby already here and can't decide!

Dh and I are REALLY struggling to name our son. We just haven't been able to decide definitively and now baby is already here and we really need to get a move on!

We have narrowed it down (I think) to either Arthur or Evander.

Our surname is Rose so any name we choose needs to fit nicely with that and not be too tricky to say one after the other. Other names we considered were Alexander, Austin and Theodore.

All suggestions/opinions very welcome and much appreciated. Thanks so much in advance x

Avery Rose

ArthurPoppy · 12/07/2023 23:19

Archie Rose

ArthurPoppy · 12/07/2023 23:28

Or Arthur with nick name Arty or Artie

WhamBamThankU · 12/07/2023 23:35

Personally not keen on the initials ER

Thanks so much everyone. Do ppl generally agree that the R sounds running into each other are a concern/thing that ppl will notice? I have wondered about this having read similar comments on other threads. I keep saying them out loud to myself to try and figure out whether it will be a problem or not.

Both mine and Dh's names end in Rs (mine in particular ends in a "ra" sound which I do sometimes worry is a bit of a mouthful to be fair!) Very interested to hear ppl's opinions on this and whether we should avoid names ending in R.

Thanks again all for the opinions and suggestions :) much appreciated x

I don’t think the ‘R’ thing is that much of an issue. Depending on where you live lots of people won’t pronounce the r anyway.

E.g. Arthur can sound like “atha” or “Afa” in London.

Christopher Robin has rs running into each other and I think has a lovely flow.

CurlewKate · 13/07/2023 07:01

I do think it should be a rule of thumb to avoid any name which will make most people say "I'm sorry, I didn't quite catch that" for the next 80 years .

RosesAndHellebores · 13/07/2023 07:10

@Newmumwhichname congratulations BTW. I think it depends on the diction of friends and family. I take other posters point about Austin Rose, as I'm a gardener but it does scan the best.

Arthur is lovely but it doesn't quite work somehow. Evan Rose is lovely but I'm not keen on the longer version.

cptartapp · 13/07/2023 07:23

Evander? No.
Evan or Alexander.

FayCarew · 13/07/2023 07:45

Arthur Rose might be heard as Martha Rose.

Rose is so overused as a middle name that it colours my opinion on the first name. Evan's a really nice name but Eva Rose looks so close.

I'd think Avery Rose was a girl, and the same goes for names like Finley Rose, Casey Rose, Charlie Rose etc

Partypiddler · 13/07/2023 07:48

Evander Rose is a stunning name!

bobby81 · 13/07/2023 07:51

Another vote for Evan. Congratulations x

I love both names but with Arthur Rose I can't help but hear "R for Rose" (especially if you know people who pronounce TH as an F).

Same- I definitely get "R for Rose". You also get A. Rose (arose). Obviously neither of these is terrible but do consider whether you mind them.

DamaskRosie · 13/07/2023 08:05

Rose is a gorgeous surname but I think you do need to take care about not inadvertently making a name that is a phrase (eg Avery Rose- a very rose) or picking anything too vowelly or that isn't clearly a name, and as pp said anything that's suitable for either sex may well read as a hyphenated girl's first name.

How about-

Matthew Rose
Elijah Rose
George Rose
Jack Rose

FayCarew · 13/07/2023 08:10

Evander Rose sounds like Evanda Rose. Not sure if Evanda is a name but it does sound a bit like Miranda or Amanda.
I think you need a non-vowelly masculine name that doesn't have a feminine version.

usernother · 13/07/2023 08:14

Arthur Rose is a good solid name. I'd trust Arthur Rose Smile

YukoandHiro · 13/07/2023 08:15

Evander is lovely. If it's between the two go with that. There are tons of Arthurs around.

TheIsleOfTheLost · 13/07/2023 09:13

I would be thinking half a Rose, as lots of people will pronounce it Arfa instead of the hard th sound. Love Alexander and don't see any issues with the names ending and starting with r.

flightless55 · 13/07/2023 09:15

If you like Evander (which is lovely by the way)

Maybe Alexander with nn Xander ?

Depends where you live. No one would pronounce it Arfa round here.

skypink · 13/07/2023 11:29

I love Evander

Labyrinth86 · 13/07/2023 12:37

Arthur Rose sounds great imo. He could be a celebrity with that name.

MissyB1 · 13/07/2023 12:41

Austin definitely.

Arthur Rose sounds like ‘arf a rose” to me!

Cas112 · 13/07/2023 12:41

Evander

Cas112 · 13/07/2023 12:42

Evan Rose is lovely as well
