Baby girl due soon and we're struggling to find names we both like.

DS has a really common name and it is a bit annoying when there is always another boy with his name wherever we go, so we wanted to go more off piste with DD.

So far, names we both agree have potential include:

Chloe
Amelie
Tamia
Sierra
Niamh (one parent is Irish)
Aoife
Eloise
Gabriella

Any thoughts?

I like Eloise, Gabriella and Chloe. But both Gabriella and Chloe are little dated, while Ellie as nickname is trendy. How about Giselle?

starryeyeze · 05/07/2023 12:57

Thanks! I do actually love Giselle but am not keen on the 'Jizz' sound at the start of the name. I can only imagine the taunts from teenage boys when she's older : /
Granted, I may be over thinking that one.

Chloe - dated, overused about 20 yrs ago
Amelie- dated, overused about 20 yrs ago
Tamia - not seen it before. Not sure. Tamsin is nice
Sierra - 1980s Ford family saloon. Doesn't it mean mountain range? No
Niamh (one parent is Irish) - ok, a bit too Evie/Eva/Ava trend
Aoife - ok, a bit too Evie/Eva/Ava trend
Eloise - pretty but a bit of a mouthful, will be Ellie
Gabriella - too long

MerryChristmasToYou · 05/07/2023 12:58

@starryeyeze , you're not overthinking.

starryeyeze · 05/07/2023 12:58

I do prefer Tamsin to Tamia but DH has said no unfortunately.
I like that with Tamia we could use 'Mia' as a nickname. Mia as a name by itself is a bit too popular for my liking.

I'm a bit surprised to hear some of the names are dated, as to me they all sound quite fresh. Very useful feedback as I have a 'dated' name and I wouldn't want to lumber my girl with one.

Eloise, Chloe and Niamh are nice names. Of those, Eloise is my favourite.

Minikievs · 05/07/2023 13:06

I love Eloise and Niamh. There was a thread the other day about names and someone mentioned Elodie, which is BEAUTIFUL and similar to your list?

starryeyeze · 05/07/2023 13:06

Thanks!
Yes Elodie is so pretty, isn't it? I'll ask DH what he thinks.

Greenfree · 05/07/2023 13:09

I love the name Niamh, I'm also a fan of Darcy but it's not on your list

MerryChristmasToYou · 05/07/2023 13:12

@starryeyeze , look at darkgreener
Chloe
Amelie

Amelie will be one of lots of Amelia/Emily/Amelie/Emilia/Emmeline etc
It seems every other girl is an Ellie or an Evie
Lily/Lila/lola/Luna names are very popular
Mia/Maia/Maya/May/Maeve type names are very popular

That website is brilliant! I'd seen some similar ones but this is just what I was looking for as you can search any name rather than just top ranked ones. Thanks for this.

Just on to say that my niece is Chloe - 21 this month- and my sister hates the fact that there's so bloody many of them around. I think she thought she was being classic but on trend at the time. Like PP said it was over-used 20 years ago and I've taught hundreds over the years. Still some now (secondary), so rather popular still.

Gabrielle/ Gabriella- shortened to Bella?
Eloise is beautiful.
Is Tamia made up? Not keen.
Niamh / Aoife both traditional and lovely. You wouldn't consider more unusual Irish names? I think it's lovely to reflect heritage.

Willowview · 05/07/2023 13:24

I prefer the bottom four names,

sorry, can't resist, Iris, Cora and Nancy.

Such a wonderful time for you 🐣hope you've got a big fan, I remember struggling with the heat!

MerryChristmasToYou · 05/07/2023 13:25

Thank you. If you go to the ONS page, there's more info including data from past years. The data only covers England & Wales.

Puffalicious · 05/07/2023 13:26

I have 3 boys, but my girls ' lists were:

Rowan
Mirren/ Murran
Maisie
Eilidh

FoodFann · 05/07/2023 13:26

Love Chloe, Amelie and Eloise. Dislike the rest (sorry!). Congrats on baby!

FlowerTink · 05/07/2023 13:27

Amelie is VERY popular, I have two girls, one primary and pre-school and they both know multiple Amelies/Amelias. Love Niamh and Eloise, they're beautiful.

beeskipa · 05/07/2023 13:30

Chloe - a lot of them around
Amelie - no
Tamia - not keen, never heard before
Sierra - makes me think of police radio haha
Niamh (one parent is Irish) - love
Aoife - love
Eloise - love this, think it's due a comeback
Gabriella - makes me think of High School Musical haha

wellingtonsandwaffles · 05/07/2023 13:35

Eloise and Elodie favourites
Niamh lovely
Others not so keen

interestingly every name you like (apart from Sierra) has a strong “e” sound in it. So how about :
Aubrey
Avery
Heidi
Marie
Ruby
Sadie

wellingtonsandwaffles · 05/07/2023 13:35

Actually sierra does have the E sound too!

Persiana · 05/07/2023 13:39

It's such personal taste isn't it. I'm not keen on any of your list apart from Gabriella.

Other ideas that may be new

Celeste
Jemima
Sasha
Allegra
Francesca
Penelope
Nina
Stella
Cleo

MerryChristmasToYou · 05/07/2023 13:53

Tamia nn Mia because Mia on its own is a bit ridiculous, sorry. I read Tamia as Tam-ya like Tanya.
