Baby Barry?

I never thought I'd see that one make a comeback!

If you take away any association (to grumpy middle aged men for example), the name itself is actually quite cute.

SirChenjins · 05/07/2023 09:30

No way - really?!

I just can't help think of Barry from Eatenders and Ben and Holly, BIG BAD BARRY!

I'm a bit older and I can't help thinking of Barry McKenzie.

AutumnCrow · 05/07/2023 09:39

Barry Gibb
Barry Humphreys
Barry Island

All the greats.

ghislaine · 05/07/2023 09:43

Barry White
Barry Manilow

Barry’s a classic. A little dated sure but a classic, normal name. Probably has some ties to family or something.

Honestly it’s refreshing to see a celebrity name their child a normal name that will age well

ComtesseDeSpair · 05/07/2023 09:56

I guess enough people must have thought it was nice originally for there to be so many older Barrys. I don’t love it, but I’ve never felt the mockery it seems to receive. It’s just a bit dated.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 05/07/2023 09:58

All the Boomer names will start making a come back soon - brace yourselves for a wave of Dereks and Nigels, Maureens and Pams...

ButImNotOldEnough · 05/07/2023 10:05

If she likes it that’s the only thing that matters. How many of us would like other peoples honest opinions on what we’ve called our own children? I wouldn’t, can imagine most would think they were boring/old fashioned/in one instance just plain doesn’t suit DC.

MMorales · 05/07/2023 10:07

I think it'll make a comeback.

Even just repeating it to myself a few times just now- it's starting to sound like a good choice.

JanesBlond · 05/07/2023 10:07

I guess it was only a matter of time but I do find it a strange choice! I still haven’t got over a baby Ian and baby Desmond I met who must both be about 8 now.

Rightsraptor · 05/07/2023 10:12

She's American, I think, so names may well have different cultural associations and resonances for her.

I hate the name, it's an old man's name to me. But I've been surprised by how many youngish American Kevins there are, when to me its a definite no-no of a name.

But then, I loath all the Iris, Elsie & Ernest names out there now, too.

PeskyRooks · 05/07/2023 10:42

My American cousin called her baby Colin so think it is different over there!

GrapeHyacinth · 05/07/2023 10:44

Cute. Dd is 19 and there was one in her year at school. (London)

GrapeHyacinth · 05/07/2023 10:45

I met a Canadian woman with a baby Trevor who'd be 19 now

GrapeHyacinth · 05/07/2023 10:46

Also went to a Christening for a baby Dean with South African parents who'd be about 16 now

AdoraBell · 05/07/2023 10:46

Grumpy old man is my FIL, the only Barry I’ve met. I hope her baby doesn’t become a grumpy old man.

newrubylane · 05/07/2023 10:48

It'll seem normal in ten years. I remember when my dad's friend named his son George when I was about ten and it sounded soooo old fashioned. Within ten years there were little Georges everywhere!

“Big bad Barry”!!

I can hear Mr Elf saying it now 😁Loved LOVED Ben and Holly.

Barry is a shocking name. Full stop.

And fwiw I went out with a Barry once.

Never said his name or called him when we were out in public.

Iwasafool · 05/07/2023 10:53

When I had my first, over 50 years ago, one mum was hysterical and her husband had to be asked to leave the ward. We were all agog at what was going on. Turned out her husband had registered the baby and given him the name Alfie. We were all so sympathetic at a child being given such an awful oldfashioned name.

I know quite a few little Alfies now and no one seems to find it horrific any more.

JauntyJinty · 05/07/2023 11:03

It's just the way it goes though isn't it?

I rememeber about 10 years ago poeple strarted calling their children Archie and Molly or Elsie and they seemed very old fasioned to me, now they seem normal. I think it mostly comes about from people naming their children after their grandparents (no idea if that's the case for Megan Trainor though!)

We'll see a return of the Garys soon, you mark my words!

Deadringer · 05/07/2023 11:03

My lovely nephew is called Barry, it's his mums maiden name, I don't see anything wrong with it at all.

NaughtPoppy · 05/07/2023 11:08

All the great granny/grandad names are done, we don’t need any more Elsies and Archies.
It will be Nan and Grampy names now, Barry, Martin, Pauline, Carol.
