DH really likes the name Lilith for a girl. I like it too, but not 100%.

Apparently its more popular in the US, but not so popular in the UK.

Just after some thoughts please?

Will forever be Niles’ wife for me.

PuppyMonkey · 04/07/2023 16:47

Niles’ wife was the unseen Maris - then Daphne. Lilith was Frasier’s wife (one of them anyway). I loved her and would happily name a child after her.Grin

toastofthetown · 04/07/2023 16:48

I really dislike it. It’s sonically unappealing and clunky sounding. The obvious diminutive is Lily which is dull as dishwater. And the cultural context of the names makes it seem try hard edgy.

CurlewKate · 04/07/2023 16:48

Neither of my children could have said it properly until they were about 10....and I have to say, I have to take a pause before I'm sure of it even now. I no longer lisp- but if I'm not careful it comes out as Lilis....

It’s a strong pro-feminine name as Lilith in it’s Jewish origin was only admonished by god due to her standing up for herself and refusing to obey Adam. The name has earlier origins from Mesopotamia.

This. All the demon/witch bullshit is just misogyny. It's a brilliant name and I really like it.

PauliesWalnuts · 04/07/2023 16:51

Of course! @PuppyMonkey I need to rewatch to get my bearings!

porridgeisbae · 04/07/2023 16:53

It's very goth OP.

Only use if you're a dark goddess worshipper and want That to be clear whenever any adult hears of your kid's name, so they might not want to have anything to do with her or her family

It's only good if you homeschool and she will only ever meet other goth parents and their children.

For some people, what it refers to is outright evil.

IknowYouButIdontLikeYou · 04/07/2023 16:56

Frasier, tv programme. NO, NO, NO

Eomt · 04/07/2023 17:02

Sure, if you want to get your child off to a great start in life call her after an evil witch/demon/monster. What's not to like?

Lilith left Adam after she refused to become subservient to him and then would not return to the Garden of Eden after she had coupled with the archangel Samael.[13]

Sounds pretty awesome to me.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 04/07/2023 17:46

Lilith, the first wife of Adam who went down to Hell, coupled with demons, and gave birth to monsters - according to the Nightside series by Simon Green.

JulieHoney · 04/07/2023 17:46

A strong feminist name - I remember the Lilith Fair festivals in the late 90s.

Calloffruity · 04/07/2023 17:48

Makes me think of children of the dust

MovingBird123 · 04/07/2023 18:10

Absolutely not. I would be suspicious of someone with this name. Name her something positive.

ReginaPerrin · 04/07/2023 18:14

Lovely name.

Redbone · 04/07/2023 18:23

No sorry really dislike it.

Buttercupsdaisiesdandelions · 04/07/2023 18:25

It's a bit "Look at us! We're cool parents who have named our daughter after a demon!"

It's a big name for a child to carry - great if she grows up to be a teenage goth, but otherwise, not so great.

JeminaSunshine · 04/07/2023 18:25

Not sure why but I find it hard to say. It sounds ugly when I say it.

SabrinaThwaite · 04/07/2023 18:27

Lilith was Frasier’s ex wife.

(Niles was married to Maris, Mel and then Daphne).

I quite liked Lilith in Frasier - she was no nonsense with a cynical sense of humour.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 04/07/2023 18:29

I like it.

LegendsBeyond · 04/07/2023 20:02

Makes me think of Frasier & devils.

Festivemoose · 04/07/2023 20:06

Strong feminist vibes.
It was the name of a feminist magazine from the 70’s and there was also the popular Lilith Fair music festivals in the 90’s that only had female performers.

MondayYogurt · 04/07/2023 20:11

It’s popular in some circles. The feminine equivalent of Aiden.

Pretty name. Lilith will be fine with kids and the under 25's who will likely just think it another variant of all the other "Lil -" names that are popular again in this generation.

Equally any older feminists (like me) will love it - "Lilith Fair" and the feminist revisioning of Adam's first wife in the Bible.

Just be aware that as pp mention, a few people (maybe the more strongly religious) will either assume you are Goth/Pagan or alternatively ignorant of the "demon" mythology.
