This thread is starting to remind me of the Joyce Grenfell Nursery Sketches with Sidney, Lavinia, George Elvis etc........ all those names are now back in vogue, i did one of these for a reading at christmas, the hamsters in the original were called Harold Wilson and Edward Heath so those names were subbed for Gordon Brown, and David Cameron.

We would have had Ada is dc2 was a girl. For Ada Lovelace, Byron's daughter, feminist, inventor of computer programming...geeks us? Oh yeah.

That's a geeky but good namesake!

Oddly on that site I get no results on the England and Wales for the name but do for the US - how odd!

England and Wales only officially list top 100 names each year, whereas US lists top 1000. This means it's not as obvious when a name is climbing up through the ranks in E&W, because it only registers on the official statistics once it's broken into the top 100.

Since 2005, Scotland produces a list of all names given to babies in Scotland each year, together with numbers (so for 2007 there were two Scottish boys named Kal-El, for example. And Scottish girls named Sister and Possum).

So you can at least get a feeling for the trend a name is following in Scotland.

One of dd's middle names is Pauline (named after my auntie who died the year before she was born). I reckon by the time she's a teenager, it'll be a cool name again.

Ada is a lovely name. I like those - I think of them aas parlourmaid names. Florence and Daisy and so on.

I used to fantasise about calling girls those rather stern Protestant names like Prudence and Patience. I do know a Faith and a Hope and, even a Chastity though I wouldn't want to be her aged 18.

I like Colin too!

My baby twins are Mervyn and Stella, and we get asked about giving them "old people" names a bit.

But we think they're beautiful names, and they suit them. Even though most people hate the name Mervyn! But he's Merv for short, and if he hates it at school, he can be Vinnie/Vynnie which is normal enough.

...I have the beginnings of a soft spot for the name Nigel, but think that might be pushing it! :D

We want to name our next cat Keith. Or maybe Kevin.

My favourite old-fashioned name atm is Irene - I can't see it as an old ladie name, because to me it's the little girl in The Princess and the Goblin

also Archie to me is a lovely and evocative name, because it reminds me of the Secret Garden, when Archibald Craven's wife Lilian was calling him from her garden.
