Hey, so we are Greek living in the Uk and expecting our DS2 in a couple of months.

He will be named after my dad, which is a BIG tradition in Greece (DS1 was named after my DH dad).

My dad is called Aristarchos which I appreciate is a bit of a mouthful and not universal and quite difficult for non British people…

So, we are thinking of introducing him as “Ari” which is a fine nn in Greece and , although I haven’t met any in the Uk, I hope it will go well?

Opinions please?

Ari will be fine in the UK, I've met a handful both as nicknames and as full names. The only downside to it is people often initially misheard it as Harry.

starrynight21 · 30/06/2023 20:24

It's a lovely name - go for it !

Throwawayme · 30/06/2023 20:27

I think it's lovely

Whatisityoucantface · 30/06/2023 20:27

It’s great!

I like it, people will possibly be mishearing Harry, but it’s easily corrected.

KatPatPat · 30/06/2023 20:30

Oh I know one Greek baby Ari but I think that’s his full name and really like it

cherryassam · 30/06/2023 20:32

I think Ari is a lovely name!

Wallabyone · 30/06/2023 20:33

Perfect 👍

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 30/06/2023 20:35

I know an Ari of Nigerian heritage. Lovely name.
Yes people may miss-hear as Harry but its so easy and short to correct, and easy to remember the correction.

The full name is lovely and Ari is great. The only downside is depending on where you live people might think his name is Harry, and the full name will be said a Arry Starkoes.

LulooLemon · 30/06/2023 21:15

Nice

VerityUnreasonble · 30/06/2023 21:23

It's quite a common (and lovely) Jewish name. I think it's absolutely fine for you to use but some people might assume Jewish heritage.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 30/06/2023 23:10

How will you pronounce Ari? I know a little boy called Ari pronounced Ahhh-ree, so not really misheard as Harry. Or will you say it with a short A sound? Either way, it is a lovely name and definitely works in the UK 😊

UsingChangeofName · 30/06/2023 23:46

I knew one Ari from when he was about 11 until he was about 16.
He was thoroughly fed up of everyone hearing putting their own interpretation on what they heard his name as Harry.

Nomorenonbinary · 30/06/2023 23:56

It's fine, but its also a shortening of several Welsh girls names.

Housenoob · 30/06/2023 23:58

It's lovely- and it's actually a very popular boy's name amongst British south Asians at the moment, as well as Aria for a girl.

DuchessOfSausage · 01/07/2023 00:01

There are Welsh names that start with Ari but not many of them are actually used. I think it might be used as a nn for Arianna, Aria or Ariana, which aren't Welsh. and a lot more popular.

I know three Arianwens

Moveoverdarlin · 01/07/2023 00:07

Ari Potter, Ari Redknapp, Ari Styles, Prince Ari.

NuffSaidSam · 01/07/2023 00:10

I know an Ari, but it's pronounced Ahh-ree and not Arry (as in Harry). I think it's sweet.

SoWhatEh · 01/07/2023 00:10

I really like it.

DuchessOfSausage · 01/07/2023 00:11

Wow, it's not much used. Only about 130 registered since 1996. I can't say I like it. I can hear people saying it as Arry Anwen.

Their families are all first language Welsh speakers which I think makes a difference.
