For little boy. Which do you prefer?

Son not Don.

Love Adair!

RichPetunia · 02/07/2023 03:59

Ezra.
I wouldn't be embarrassed shouting Ezra in for his tea.
Adair - I'd be laughed at.

Both are totally dire. Ezra perhaps a little less so.

!! Oh dear!

Probably would be known as Addy

Adair is really awful. It’s the surname of an infamous murderer, not even a first name.

Ezra is super common where I am in East London - I know 5 aged 5 and under- but I much prefer it.

arlequin · 02/07/2023 10:35

@Embarra55ed haha ok a clear winner for you!!

Ezra is OK, at least it's a proper first name
Although not as nice as something like Elijah or Elias, Ezra is a little harsher.

Adair, definitely a surname. Red Adair is the first phrase that pops into my head. An American who was famous for fighting oil well fires, Wikipedia tells me. I don't like surnames as first names anyway, but at least better known ones like Elliot or Taylor 'flow', Adair doesn't. People will be confused.

So Ezra I'd say, but ideally back to the drawing board.

gogomoto · 02/07/2023 11:08

But they are surnames, fine as surnames but why not use a normal first name? Think about your now grown up child applying for a job, who would you hire all things being equal (not in a trendy place, a more formal job). I used to screen applicants and we were pretty ruthless if we didn't like the name (we'd get 500-1000 for one job!) my boss hated silly names

Wow I can’t believe anyone would admit to this in writing - you actually rejected job applicants based on their names?! You do realise that by and large people don’t choose their own names? Appalling.

BonnieGlasses · 02/07/2023 11:21

They're both awful.
How about Aidan? Or Edgar?

WhisperingAutistic · 02/07/2023 11:26

Ezra. I'm not a massive fan but Adair is awful.

mrsdrablowsbittersister · 02/07/2023 12:53

What are you talking about? Ezra is an Old Testament forename.

If your team are rejecting candidates on a ridiculous basis AND doing it incorrectly, I'd say they're dodgy a bullet to be honest.

SpringIntoChaos · 02/07/2023 13:01

Neither, sorry...Adair sounds very 'wet' to me, in the same 'name school' as Malcolm.

Ezra is a bit too 'biblical' for my taste and I'm really not a fan of biblical names.

If I had a gun to my head though, I'd have to pick Ezra.

FirstFallopians · 02/07/2023 13:07

I like Adair in theory but I’m from NI as well so as soon as I hear it my brain subconsciously shouts JONNY.

Alistair has a similar Scottish-vibe, and is v underused.

I intensely dislike Ezra. I just don’t get its popularity.

TitoMojito · 02/07/2023 13:14

GloomySkies · 27/06/2023 13:10

Neither. Ezra Miller is currently very famous for all the wrong reasons. The Adair family are well known loyalist terrorists in Northern Ireland. Johnny 'Mad Dog' Adair did 16 years in prison. His son died of a heroin overdose. Awful connotations.

My first thought reading the thread title was Mad Dog, but in fairness he’s fairly local to me so I might be more conscious of that than most.

The Scottish spelling is Alasdair so that would actually work!

midsomermurderess · 02/07/2023 19:49

I hear Adair in an affected Scottish accent. I’d go for Ezra, but not that keen.

dotdotdotdash · 02/07/2023 20:49

If being unique is the most important factor, Adair… If you are Jewish, Ezra. If you want a good solid name that isn’t going to raise eyebrows, neither.

This is extremely worrying.

Ezra is definitely not a surname. It is an Old Testament first name, often used by Jewish families. If you are really discriminating on the basis of names that is illegal.

Think I'm leaning towards Ezra.
Some of the comments on here are really harsh!

absolutely @arlequin .

@gogomoto if you screen out candidates with Old Testament names because you think they are 'silly' you could be accused of anti-semitism. Ezra is an absolutely classic name.

quietnightmare · 02/07/2023 22:20

Ezra always makes me think of the child groomer from pretty little liars 🤮

wutheringkites · 02/07/2023 22:24

Why would someone raise a eyebrow at the use of an Old Testament name?
