Our DD is named Billie. I am not in love with her name (hubby chose) so am wanting a nickname for her.

OP posts:

I have a Billie. She doesnt have a nickname but at school some called her Lee but as an adult she just uses Billie .

ElizaWinter · 14/06/2023 14:31

Bob

Alwayswonderedwhy · 14/06/2023 14:39

What's her actual full name? Billie is a nickname.

TheMurderousGoose · 14/06/2023 14:40

'Billie is a nickname'

is that the 10th time now?

so helpful to the OP.

Highdaysandholidays1 · 14/06/2023 14:43

Both my children don't like being called by their child nicknames now they are older, sounded cute at the time, but grew out of them by about 7/8, and now both go by their full names which are not long but are proper names. Billie is a nice name, I don't think it's improved by calling them Bill or Boo, so if you really hate it talk with your husband. It's a lovely name though IMO.

purplecorkheart · 14/06/2023 14:48

Lee

Nicknames just happen naturally, and they're very rarely cute. We used to have a kid on our street who was called 'Skid', short for 'Skidmark' and the name genuinely stuck through to adulthood after everyone had long forgotten of it's gross origins.

Your best outcome is someone saying:
Billie, Bill, Bill'd-a-bear, Bear, Bear Necessities, Ness, Nesty, Nesty Nick, Nick

Aged 20: "Hi I'm Nick, short for Billie" 😆

I know someone who was forever known as Max from 6th form because he had long eyelashes and there was a max factor mascara advert on tv at the time. His real name was Nathan I think but he kind of gave up trying to get people to call him that.

LittleRobin01 · 14/06/2023 14:51

How old is she? Are friends and family already calling her a type of nickname like Bills?

RedRiverSun · 14/06/2023 14:53

Lee

LinaM20 · 14/06/2023 15:01

I’m my experience, the child becomes the name and you grow to love the name because you love the child. My son has grown up with a few friends that had names we thought were awful when we were introduced, but now we’ve known them for several years we don’t even think about it anymore because we like those kids so as an extension we grew to like the names.

PyjamasToMyLeft · 14/06/2023 20:56

I’d pick a long version of her name and use that. That’s what I do with our cats. And my DC actually come to think of it, as they have quite short names.

Even if it’s not a real name. Billberina for example.

OopsieeDaisy · 14/06/2023 23:00

I love the name Billie for a girl! Bee is nice as a nickname but as others have said, nicknames tend to just come about on their own.

JeandeServiette · 14/06/2023 23:04

Wilhelmina?

eandz13 · 14/06/2023 23:31

Bilbo.

Just let a nickname form naturally over time. I have 4 kids with very 'plain' classic names, each of them have ended up with a really random nickname that just happened upon them one day and stuck. For example, one of them is Banana, and it sounds weird to say their real name! Grin

Billie is the nickname.

Why would you accept a name you didn’t love?

This. I don’t like Billie at all.

Isthisreasonable · 14/06/2023 23:41

What was your choice of name? I'd go with that as the nn and see which of the 2 sticks. There's no law that says the nn is related to the first name. You may find your dd suits Billie better.

peaceinourtime · 15/06/2023 03:15

I would like to suggest Willie as its cute and sounds nice but of course people see that name/word as a male reproductive organ 😞

Judgyjudgy · 15/06/2023 04:16

Bideshi · 14/06/2023 11:03

Billie is a nickname

This. It's a lovely name for a girl.

Labradoria · 15/06/2023 04:39

I don't like the name Billie either but I also had the physical ability to say to my dh 'no, not Billie, I don't like it'.

Lwrenagain · 15/06/2023 04:54

Bee, definitely you can emoji her then also 🐝😍

Names arent something people agree on, so no idea why people would post just to say they don't like a baby's name.
Okay, cool, don't name your baby it then.

I really like the name Billie, reminds me of Billie piper and I loved her in Dr who.

Do you have a name you do love, OP?

Maireas · 15/06/2023 05:40

I didn't like Billie either.
It's a tricky one. Belle?
