Could be Nicolas or straight Nico. Mainly worried about posh/pretentious…

That you lived in a new build in Northampton and your furniture is crushed velvet

Before I moved to Italy I'd have said cool, female, Velvet Underground.
Having been here for 30 years, if someone said "I want you to meet my friend Nico" I'd know he was likely to be southern Italian and his actual name is Nicola, and he's between 50-60. He was named after his grandfather and isn't keen on his name.
I live in the area where San Nicola is big. But the name is falling out of favour now and in the 8 classes of teenagers I have, I don't have one.
It's definitely definitely not posh here.

My favourite ever (male) singer's stage name is Nicola Sirkis. birth name is actually Nicholas.

RoxyMuzak · 08/06/2023 20:57

Allez Nicola !

CatherinedeBourgh · 08/06/2023 21:06

Nico is the usual nickname for Nicolas (Spanish version of Nicholas). Very, very mainstream name.

MrsGhastlyCrumb · 08/06/2023 21:21

I wanted Nico for my youngest, but we couldn't agree on a long, 'Sunday name' version, ITSWIM?

Still gutted.

Anyway, if you like it, use it. There's enough people going mad for Angus/Arabella/Tarquin/Tabatha on here, you'll be out-poshed anyway. Personally I think it's good to have a formal longer name with Nico as a nickname but it doesn't really matter that much.

It would make me think that someone loved Velvet Underground

This. And would start me humming ‘All Tomorrow’s Parties’ in a German-accented croak.

Arewehumanorarewecupboards · 08/06/2023 21:36

It’s the opposite of posh and pretentious.

This. And would start me humming ‘All Tomorrow’s Parties’ in a German-accented croak.

I actually bought 'Desertshore', and after I lent it to a friend, never asked for it back. I knew someone who worked backstage at a gig she did in 1981 and she badgered him for some speed. He gave her some, but it didn't seem to improve her singing.

My French ex-boss, and an (also ex) Italian colleague. So European men basically.

hartof · 08/06/2023 21:54

I love it, but my last cat was called Nico. Our current cat is called Rocco so I do love the Italian names.

But I do love the name Nico for a boy I think I'd go with Nicholas as a full name but we'd call him Nico

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 08/06/2023 21:55

I live in Spain where it's Nicolás or Nico (neeko) for short so I would assume Spanish connections.
Why not use Nicolas with Nico as a nickname?

NorthWestThree · 08/06/2023 22:03

Makes me think of the girl from Runaways

Same

SunsetOverEasterIsland · 08/06/2023 22:10

My first thoughts are Nico Rosberg and Nico Hulkenburg, both F1 drivers. I'd pronounce it Neeco and I really like the name. If you love it, use it 😀

adamsaboutnothing · 08/06/2023 22:11

Literally the most popular boy name in my village at the moment. I know 4 born in the last 6 months. All Nico's, not shortened for anything else.

egowise · 08/06/2023 22:11

drpet49 · 08/06/2023 17:22

That you were Italian

This

JimnJoyce · 08/06/2023 22:13

F1 driver. Great name

Lightbulbspark · 08/06/2023 22:14

For Nico or Niko, I'd think you had a Greek ancestry. Nick and Nicholas are great but there can be a bit of teasing with Knickerless. But then no name is immune from that type of teasing.

Forgetmenott · 08/06/2023 22:17

I would assume it was a French girl. Or some other European connection. But definitely a girl.

The middle aged woman on Emmerdale

This. It sounds so try-hard when her screen husband refers to her as 'Neeeko' that I physically cringe. 😂

Alwayswonderedwhy · 08/06/2023 22:17

I would assume Italian. Definitely wouldn't think posh or pretentious.

Sparkleshine21 · 08/06/2023 22:19

Makes me think of killing eve 😂

JMSA · 08/06/2023 22:19

It's cute but definitely not posh.
