Is your name Julia? Do you like it?

DH suggested Julia. I love it too.

BUT

Will she hate me? Is it old fashioned? I don't know any kids called Julia, which is making me worry it's more 'of a certain time'.

My name is Julia and I love it! It’s not a common name and never has been which makes it all the more special ❤️

Nightmanagerfan · 07/06/2023 11:24

Yes it's my name and I absolutely love it! I've been known as Jules, Juju and various other nicknames but in my 40s I'm very happy to be Julia.

I have a few friends with baby Julias and I think it's lovely.

Sundaychild · 07/06/2023 11:37

A good friend of mine was a Giulia.

Theoldcuriosityshop · 07/06/2023 12:12

Julia is lovely, as is Juliet.

Sunshinebuttercupsrainbows · 07/06/2023 12:13

My 6yo had a Julia in his class at his previous school. It really suited her and is such a beautiful name.

Sgtmajormummy · 07/06/2023 12:25

People often call DD Giulia but it’s not her name! She must have a look about her and if so, Julias are bookish, self contained, a natural, sincere and simple soul.
Though I say it myself! Grin

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 07/06/2023 20:58

I'm a Julia and feel very lucky with my parents choice!Grin

I love that it's a timeless classic with a rich history (Roman, Shakespearean, mentioned in the Bible and used by loads of classic authors and in namesake songs), easy to spell and pronounce and very international - yet it's never been overly popular in the UK (I've generally been the only one in school and work - I'm UK born, others I've met have usually been different ages and nationalities to me).

Basically, go for it! I'm kind of glad I had a DS as if I'd had a DD I don't know that I could have managed to find a name that ticks as many boxes as Julia Grin

Prefer Juliet

LancashireSquirrel · 07/06/2023 21:51

Also came on to say Juliet. Julia is nice but Juliet is even more special IMO.

continentallentil · 08/06/2023 00:19

I know a few youngish American Julias - I think it’s more popular there.

I don’t think it’s dated at all - it’s like Claudia or Serena - names that are always around. Also Juliet is getting quite popular.

AssertiveGertrude · 08/06/2023 00:41

It is beautiful ! So timeless and pretty

KittytheHare · 08/06/2023 00:42

My beautiful 15 yo niece is Julia - gorgeous name.

Loopyloo159 · 08/06/2023 00:49

Absolutely love Julia . My two best friends are called Julie and Julia ..love them both but Julia is my favourite name .

Glowly · 08/06/2023 08:07

Thanks everyone! Relief😅

Not to be dim but how are you pronouncing Juliet? I like it a lot, but I recall someone told me it isn't pronounced 'Julie-ett', which is how I was pronouncing it.

Do you like Juliana? Just want to have options!

OP posts:
FayCarew · 08/06/2023 14:48

Juliana is too long, and doesn't really give more options. I think the -ana bit tends to sound like a surname - Julie Arner

Juliet is more JU-li-et than Julie-ETT.
The difference is like in Julia is JU-li-a not Julie-AH.

Julianne - very 1960s sounding. Most Julies were Julie Anne

WhisperingAutistic · 08/06/2023 14:49

It's not my name but it's a very lovely name. I only had boys but considered Julia/Juliet if I had a daughter.

dwightschrutebeets · 08/06/2023 20:16

I love Juliette. I'm not a fan of Julia it just feels dated. I would pronounce Julie ett tho so don't know how others are saying it!

FayCarew · 08/06/2023 20:25

@dwightschrutebeets , Juliette in the UK is Julie-ETTE. Juliet is JUL-i-et.
A bit like the difference between Janet and Janette

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/06/2023 01:10

I pronounce Juliet/Juliette the same way -"Julie-ET" - but the "ET" really doesn't have that much more emphasis than the "Julie" part. It's only on Mumsnet I've read that Juliet/Juliette can be pronounced differently. I can't say I've noticed it as being especially obvious in RL situations where I've heard the name from others... not like the different pronunciations of Esme, Helena, Naomi, Evelyn, Andrea etc.

So if you prefer Juliet to Julia OP, it personally wouldn't stop me from using it!(and I think Juliet is really lovely too- it has a more romantic, sort of ethereal/ artistic vibe to me compared to more classic, serious/patrician Julia I think?)

Juliana I'm not so keen on- it seems overly elaborate/frilly for no reason? But then I prefer Lily or Lilia to Liliana so that's obviously just my taste.

Yes, I agree. This sums up the difference.

I love Juliet, not quite so keen on Juliette.

Julia, though, is just gorgeous. I might've used it if I'd had a daughter.

whiteroseredrose · 09/06/2023 04:08

I'm a Julia and am happy with my name.

I do get called Julie most of the time as in my generation Julie was more popular, probably because of Julie Andrews.

Aslanplustwo · 09/06/2023 05:13

I think it is a lovely name, and prefer it to Juliet.

erikbloodaxe · 09/06/2023 06:04

Juliet/Juliette sounds a bit twee to me. Julia is a beautiful name though.

strawberrywhisk · 09/06/2023 06:11

I'm Julia, I get called Jay

I was going to be a Julie, but someone my mum knew called her daughter it, so mine stuck an a on the end 😀
