Love it

AgnesX · 30/05/2023 19:25

I love Roisin....and most people can pronounce it too!

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 30/05/2023 19:31

Beautiful name & if you love it use it!

loverofbono · 30/05/2023 19:40

Beautiful, an alternative would be Róise. Pronounced Rowsha. (Although some say it like Roisha) Either way I adore it

Whatisityoucantface · 30/05/2023 19:43

Love it!

Gothambutnotahamster · 30/05/2023 19:46

I hate it - my least favourite Irish girls name. Always reminds me of a horrible old woman that my mum used to work with (I'm Irish).

Confusion101 · 30/05/2023 19:50

I love it. Majority of dialects in Ireland pronounce it Roe-sheen but Ulster Irish pronounces it Rosh-een. Which way are you thinking?

CastleTower · 30/05/2023 20:03

Love it.

I'm English and read the thread! I'll be honest I had no idea how to pronounce it or had ever heard of it.

But guess it's not too much of a problem if day to day you're in Ireland?

AlligatorPsychopath · 30/05/2023 21:15

Always been one of my favourites. Musical and traditional. She will occasionally get called "Roy-sin" but such is the fate of all those with Gaelic names. I get twitchy every time I hear English people say "Ass-ling".

AlligatorPsychopath · 30/05/2023 21:16

Ps. I'm Ulater-born but always said "Roe-sheen", although it's true that some say "Rosh".

Roisin Murphy. You will have heard her name.

I think the name is beautiful. I do think some English speakers will go for Roy Sin pronunciation as a first attempt, I know the Roe Sheen pronunciation from Roisin Conaty who is often on 8 out of 10 cats does Countdown. I love her.

In all honesty, I volunteer in a school and we have lots of children have names from all different countries of origin, or unique spellings and we just learn the correct pronunciation. Kids pick it up fast, most children do correct an adult or another child if they say it incorrectly. I constantly had to tell people how to pronounce my surname as a child and adult before I got married and happily let it go so it just seems like a normal thing to me.

They can ask her same as they would anyone with a name they're not familiar with.

TopHatWonderer · 31/05/2023 11:45

@bidenfor I feel I do that when I say Saoirse as in Ronan. It naturally lends itself to an Irish lilt otherwise I feel like the French Policeman in Allo Allo. My Mum used to have a few Irish pronunciations in her speech which we thought were hilarious. Her Grandma was Irish, so my Grandma in turn had lots of Irish lilts to her voice. It has died out for us unless we are impersonating her to reminisce.

I love it, if DS had been a girl this would have been the name :)

DD is called Clodagh

ourflagmeansdeath · 31/05/2023 20:52

Beautiful, I love it - I'm not Irish, I live in England and knew how to pronounce. I know 2 in my area
