I think we have our name - Romilly Wren

Curious to know what people think about our chosen name?

Romilly Wren (surname begins Ch, two syllables)

It was always between Romilly, Wren or Delphine/Delphi. And then someone suggested Wren as a middle name and bam, loved it. I do hope little one doesn't get 'Milly' as a nickname though 😕 This is our fourth child and I just think this goes so well with the others.

If you are using Wren as a middle name then it's irrelevant if it flows or if there are too many 'r' sounds. No one apart from new parents call other people their full names.

Choose the first name that you love the most (Romilly is lovely) and as long as it sounds ok with your surname that is all that matters.

@CrazyArmadilloLady its cultural isn’t it? Charlotte and Elizabeth are run of the mill names. Wren is unusual and not a common name in the UK.

OK, but they’re not more plain than Wren. They might be a
lot more well known and/or classic. But they’re definitely not more ‘plain’.

Wren is the epitome of plain.

MissHavershamReturns · 01/06/2023 09:41

I don’t agree. If we were in Armenia Wren would not be a plain name - I think we can probably agree on that. Plain (in the sense of straightforward and nothing fancy) is a cultural construct.

Elizabeth and Charlotte are seen as simple ordinary names in the UK.

Wren is a very little used name for children in the UK. As a child’s name it is not plain.

If someone said I’m giving my child a plain name as I don’t want them to stand out, so I’ve gone for Wren, I think most people would do a double take.

Sellotape6 · 01/06/2023 09:46

I think both names are lovely! But I wouldn’t choose Wren as a middle name as the two R-sounds together don’t flow that well for me.

Hannahsbananas · 01/06/2023 10:05

Wren is the epitome of plain
Oh, give over, of course it isn’t.
Jane or Susan are plain names. Wren is something else entirely (in every sense!)

KirstenBlest · 01/06/2023 10:42

I don't think that the name Wren is a nice sound. it's a nice enough surname

Romilly Wren Ch-- sounds like a firm of consultants

KirstenBlest · 01/06/2023 10:57

@Hannahsbananas , I think that Jane and Susan are much prettier names, and would be unusual on a baby nowadays.

Pemba · 01/06/2023 12:07

Wren is relatively unusual as a first name, though it seems to be gaining a lot of popularity. I agree that the sound 'ren' is plain though. Then Charlotte for example is longer and more mellifluous. But it is a lot more prevalent as a name so considered 'normal' as people are so used to it.

It all depends how you are using the word 'plain' really.

My daughter was going to have middle name Grace and at the last minute I went for Jane. I like it, it's elegant.

Cyanchicken · 01/06/2023 16:29

Gorgeous!

Wren and Jane are exactly the same sort of name. Plain. Although, to me, Jane has a simple elegance.

It’s pointless arguing over it, since like beauty, ‘plain’ is in the eye of the beholder.

CrazyArmadilloLady · 01/06/2023 16:45

And Susan and Jane aren’t ‘plain’ names per se, they’re names from a different era that may now sound tired to some, purely because they’re dated (although Jane, to me, is timeless and not dated).

But they were popular at one time, and wouldn’t have been considered plain at all, then.

Wren sounds like ren. That absolutely is plain. Even the bird is plain (by bird standards!).

Again, not much point arguing about it - nobody is going to be persuaded as it’s all different to individual perception and preference.

Lovelynames123 · 01/06/2023 20:12

No she's never been called Romilly by mistake, to my knowledge at least, although my friends little girl did call her Brocoli 😂

nicedaydoreen · 01/06/2023 20:14

Honestly it's a bit of a tounge twister. Also Wren is one of those suddenly fashionable names so likely to also go out of fashion.
But it's a middle name so basically irrelevant anyway so if Romilly works just go for it.

LadyDanburysHat · 30/05/2023 15:08

I like both names but wouldn't put Wren with Romilly, Its too much R.

Agreed on this. Lovely names separately but unsure together. Obviously do what you love though, if you love it do other people's (strangers) opinions matter?

continentallentil · 01/06/2023 21:50

I much prefer Romilly to Wren, and much prefer Wren to Delphi, so I think it’s your best option of those three

OutIander · 02/06/2023 00:02

I really like it, I love alliteration.
I struggle with my Rs, but even so, I love it.
