Thoughts on Kasia? It’s a Polish name that comes from the Polish version of Catherine. How would you pronounce it, and where are you from?

Cash ah

Polish names are beautiful

DuesToTheDirt · 30/05/2023 20:54

I'd have said it to rhyme with lazier, on the grounds that I know a Tasia, which rhymes with lazier in my bog-standard English accent.

DivorcedAndDelighted · 30/05/2023 20:56

I'm English. My first guess (before reading that it was Polish) was Casey-a.
Now I know it's Polish I'm guessing Cash-a
Nobody is going to know how to pronounce it so this kid would have a lifetime of having to explain her name. Not that this is necessarily awful - one of my kids has an ethnic name which always has to be explained, but also uses an English version if they don't want to bother explaining.

I thought kas ee ah

Auntieobem · 30/05/2023 21:05

I know one well, pronounced Kasha.

KayEmAy · 01/06/2023 21:34

Obsessed with it, absolutely use it <3

continentallentil · 01/06/2023 21:48

KAZ-EE-uh?

Do they not have some Katrina like version? That would be easier..

louderthan · 01/06/2023 23:30

Kasia. Like Casio.

Yes it's either Kaszka or Kaska with a dash over the s. Sz and s with a dash both make sh sound.

@Simianwalk sz and ś are different sounds. Sz is harder than the English sh sound, and ś is softer.

Kasha - met a couple of Polish women called Kasia, pronounced Kasha.

From the UK.

Cheeseplantt · 02/06/2023 00:02

Ka zee uh - south coast

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 02/06/2023 00:03

Not sure why you would use it unless you have a Polish reason to, and in which case you'd use Katarzyna.

Nobody was asking who you feel is eligible to use the name 😂 So bizarre that you 1) assume I don’t have a Polish connection and 2) are telling me what names I am allowed to choose if I am Polish. Mumsnet is a weird place sometimes.

Thank you to all the helpful posters!

Mumsnet is the only place I've ever heard people saying you can't use a name unless you have a connection to that country, and that you must give the "full versions" of names. 🤣🤣

KirstenBlest · 02/06/2023 10:28

@Confusion101 , I disagree - Mumsnet is the only place I've ever heard people saying you can use a name if you don't have a connection to that country/religion.

I agree with your point "that you must give the "full versions" of names. "

I think it depends on the name.

mastertomsmum · 02/06/2023 10:34

Worked with 2 people called Kasia, both Polish and pronounced Kasha. Years ago I knew of an old English name Kesia pronounced Kayseeah.

User9088 · 02/06/2023 10:44

I would guess it is said Kasha like Sasha. I know a Zosia so basing it on that pronunciation.

I have an Irish name (which I like) and it really isn't that big a deal to tell people how to pronounce it if they read it wrong. You only have to mention it once and then they know - it's fine!
