Thoughts on Kasia? It’s a Polish name that comes from the Polish version of Catherine. How would you pronounce it, and where are you from?

I would say Ka-sha

My best friend from school is a Kasia, her mum is polish. It's pronounced Kasha.

I would have said Ka-see-a until I met one recently on a work call & all the colleagues were calling her Kasha.

Kashka is even more of a diminutive.

You might need to explain how it’s said but it shouldn’t cause any problems beyond that

I know someone called this and she pronounced it as kay sha like k(asia) she wasn't polish though

hmm, I think wouldn’t say that Kaśka (Kashka) is more a diminutive than Kasia or equivalent to Katie. It’s more of a diminutive for an adult (maybe compare it to Vincent - full name, Vince - Kaśka for an adult, Vinnie - Kasia for a child), I would never call a baby or a small child Kaśka.

I read it as though Kas-E-ah!

And it's very informal - you wouldn't call someone Kaszka (or similar super-diminutive) unless they were a child or you knew them extremely well. Pana Kasia would be okay, though

Yes it's either Kaszka or Kaska with a dash over the s. Sz and s with a dash both make sh sound.

I think this thread demonstrates well that their name will never be pronounced properly and tbh, it should normally be Katarzyna anyway. As someone Polish that constantly spells their name out and gets endless "where's your name from? Are you from there/were you born there/family from there?" I'm personally not sure why you'd go that way and make things difficult for your child.

@LosingMyPancakes sorry to hear your experience so many wonderful Polish names and I hate the idea that British-Poles wouldn't go for one. DSS is called Bronisław (Bronek) and it's brill! People get used to it.

I’m intrigued by the soft “sh” that has no English equivalent. I know a Kasia (pronounced Kasha as far as I can tell) and her full name, Katarzyna, sounds like Kat-a-zhy-na (zh = the French j or the s in leisure and y = “eye”.

K-Asia?

I would have said Asia with a K, but I can see it’s actually Kasha. I think it’s very pretty and people will catch on.

I work with a Katarynska who goes by Kasia, Polish by heritage. She pronunces it Kash uh

Kaszka is porridge!! No Polish person would ever write a name like that. Kaśka is the name.
