Today as a name. Anyone else have a guilty pleasure in out their names?

For a little girl.

I know I could never use it! It’s too out there and isn’t really a name. My DD is a Lola and I’m due another little girl soon, who I’ve decided to call Maria (H loves this name too)

But I think Today is stunning…. It’s just so refreshing.

For clarification, again, I absolutely won’t use it as I know it’ll get a low of horrible responses and we’ve settled on Maria

But just ponder the name a little and then think. It’s nice isn’t it?

My DD went to nursery with a ‘Maybe’ but it was spelt differently. It really suited her!

I don't think Today works as a name, but I do have a weakness for names like Opal and Emerald and Misty, so I can't really criticise.

Lots of cultures use ordinary words as names and English used to—just read some 16th and 17th century names for goodness sake? Praise God Barebone being a famous one. Some African naming conventions include the day of the week. Chinese and Korean naming styles use ordinary words with carefully chosen sounds or meanings to build connections within and between generations or to serve as a wish for the child.

To quote the much missed Terry Pratchett:

"There’d be a Chlamydia Weaver toddling around today if her mother hadn’t suddenly decided Sally was easier to spell."

Maeby (Maybe) is a character in the sitcom 'Arrested Development'

Yes, and don't forget her alter ego (for fundraising purposes) Surely 😁

It does have a nice sound to it but I agree it's very unusuable as a name. I actually quite like Day by itself.
I really liked Echo while pregnant with my second child. I had a little boy instead. He does have an extremely unusual name but never had to explain it at all or had strange looks when introduced him.

I knew an Echo years ago.

I do like Holliday (with two 'L's.

I really don't think Today works as a name at all, it's just TOO commonly used in daily life. Words like hope and faith can get merged in a bit. I do normally like words for names.

WouldYouLikeACrabPuff · 24/05/2023 19:42

I used river for a middle name, it really suits them luckily.

I like Dixie but I think I'd use it for a dog.

Luredbyapomegranate · 24/05/2023 22:57

It’s the hormones OP.

Kanaloa · 24/05/2023 23:05

I really liked Salve before DD was born. We didn’t use it 😂 but I liked it. I also like Solace. Not names I’d use, but I save them in my notebook just in case I need a name for my novel characters.

I once vaguely knew a girl called Loveday which is a very cool name, and it suited her. Not keen on Today though. Quite apart from the confusion it'd cause, it reminds me of the tabloid newspaper that snooker player advertised.

Today =Toadie (Rebecchi) NEIGHBOURS PUT YO HANDS UP!

Wildernesswandering · 24/05/2023 23:18

How about Loveday, is a beautiful Cornish name.

RenaissenceBelle · 24/05/2023 23:20

I had Jubilee on my list - she would have been Billie for short. We did use Loveday for a middle name actually, a lovely old Cornish name, as a nod to my heritage. I think it roughly translates as 'have a lovely day' - which I thought was a great meaning!

Santa… just wish Santa wasn’t called Santa

I’ve always loved Tuesday & Thursday as names! DDs are NOT called Tuesday or Thursday sadly!
Maeby has grown on me too.
Ireland Baldwin has just called her baby Holland and im loving it!

Orders76 · 25/05/2023 00:12

You could go for another language like
Today in Irish is Innui(in new), or 'Now' is a lovely word Anois (anish).

I named my kid a guilty pleasure name and it ended up really suiting her Grin she’s very popular and charismatic so can get away with it. If she was shy I would have let her use her middle name but she completely fits her out-there name. Its last recorded use was about 300 years ago so not a ‘made up name’ but definitely unique.

I also like word names that sound namey but aren’t. Like Vendetta. Or Silence. But I’d never saddle a child with that! I also met someone whose legal name was Ever and thought that was pretty cool.

Last recorded use was 300 years ago?

That's going to stay in my head as a riddle.

I don't normally like really far out names for children but I watched a documentary on the 60s summer of love in california, and there was a beautiful model and actress hippie who called herself Today Malone. I thought it so beautiful and suited her so well

CallieQ · 25/05/2023 01:07

Come on this has to be a wind up!

CallieQ · 25/05/2023 01:09

Prefer Tomorrow tbh

CallieQ · 25/05/2023 01:09

Yesterday?

DiscoBeat · 25/05/2023 01:09

I just can't imagine it, just the thought of someone asking your name and saying 'Today'. Will be the butt of jokes everywhere!

DiscoBeat · 25/05/2023 01:10

When did you last see Today?" "Today." "Yes, when did you see her?" "I saw Today today."
🤣

I feel the same about Rudolph, a little Rudi would be so sweet!

It’s not a name. It’s just a word.

So is River (phoenix), January (Jones), Delta (goodrem) , Autumn. etc. So what? All names are just words, some made up, some mean something.
