How badly will Evie date?

yellowmeerkat · 19/05/2023 21:02

Just that really - do you think the name Evie will date badly?
I realise it’s very popular - but not all popular names date eg Amelia, Olivia, Emily, Emma, Charlotte - all popular 30 years ago and still popular now.
What are peoples thoughts please?

I think it will quite a lot. In the sense it will work for the generation now but future parents are unlikely to be calling their daughter Evie

It just makes me think of the Pokémon. It's a cute Pokémon but I couldn't use it as a human name.

msisfine · 19/05/2023 21:13

I'm a teacher - Evie is a nice name but is ten a penny at the moment. Two to a class!

denpark · 19/05/2023 21:16

It's a lovely name but as a previous poster has said, ridiculously popular within schools right now.

I'd always give a child a more grown up name and then shorten via a nickname so they have a name with a certain degree of gravitas when they're older.

So, Evelyn, Eveline, etc for Evie. Then she has choices.

Thelondonone · 19/05/2023 21:18

My Evie is a teenager and no others in her big secondary year group.

BirbFriend · 19/05/2023 21:19

Pokémon.

DustyLee123 · 19/05/2023 21:19

It’s a lovely name.

museumum · 19/05/2023 21:19

I know one who is 17. It’s not a name that just appeared.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 19/05/2023 21:53

Yes, Evie will probably date if used as a given name (as opposed to a nickname for more classic Eve, Eva, Evelyn etc on the BC) - only because you don't tend to meet many middle aged or elderly Evie's so it'll place their age as likely born post-2000.

However this is no different to names like Ava, Isla, Lyra etc - there's lots of girls names used now that you would be unlikely to hear on a Gran or an older Mum, so I don't see why Evie would date any worse than lots of others that are popular.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 19/05/2023 21:55

I think it will date noticeably, but most popular names will - even classic ones.

Startyabastard · 19/05/2023 21:56

Lovely name but I wouldn't name a child it based on its popularity.

Luredbyapomegranate · 20/05/2023 01:57

It’s going to date because it and all it’s variations have spiked so dramatically.

If you must use it, go for the classic Eve which is going to date less than using the diminutive as a full name

Luredbyapomegranate · 20/05/2023 01:57

ITS

Epicstorm · 20/05/2023 02:29

I prefer Eve to or Eva. More grown up and sophisticated. You can always use Evie as a nn.

Epicstorm · 20/05/2023 02:30

Should say to Evie or Eva.

WilkinsonM · 20/05/2023 02:40

It's already dated tbh

user1492757084 · 20/05/2023 02:54

Eve will date better than Evie.

Do you like these feminine and grown up names ..
Eva
Java
Genevieve
Vera

fUNNYfACE36 · 20/05/2023 04:52

Eve makes me think of retching (heave) ,Eva as one who heaves and Evie as feeling as though you might.
3 dreadful names!

RedRobin100 · 20/05/2023 04:55

Just go with eve or eva? Css as not see them dating, and you can use Evie as a nickname

KeyboardMash · 20/05/2023 08:22

I don't think there's anyway to predict whether, as all the Evies are turning 80, it's going to sound classic like Charlotte or become the new old-lady name like Doris. There's no way to tell whether it's going to fall way out of fashion or just become a bit less prevalent.

DuchessOfSausage · 20/05/2023 11:08

It's been very popular for over 15 years, and there are a lot of Eves and Evelyns who go by Evie, and a lot of Evas, Avas, Edies and Ivys. I know some Evies in their 20s.

I think you'll be catching the tail end of the trend, and she'll be likely to always be one of several Evies.. I think it already sounds tired.

MuckyPlucky · 20/05/2023 11:09

It already has dated. Reached peak saturation mode approx 5yrs ago and everything since then has seemed rather lazy & dated.

Summertimesmile · 20/05/2023 11:11

My 20 year old was going to be Evie so I don’t think will date much if still popular and I certainly wasn’t going to give a longer version as a name is a name and nobody needs a choice of names.

Pahpahpotato · 20/05/2023 11:14

I personally think it’s already a bit dated, sorry! I think the reason the other names you’ve listed aren’t dated are that they are ‘proper’ names, they’re not cutesy twee nickname type names. Evie short for Evelyn, Evangeline, even Eve would be better I think in that sense.

The other names you've quoted are classic grownup names. Names that date tend to be ones that are populist or have an 'ee' sound at the end.

Names with an 'ee' sound at the end also run the risk of sounding twee or childish when someone is a grown up. When someone takes on a more serious job their name carries weight so Evelyn would work better than Evie, in my opinion.
