How badly will Evie date?

yellowmeerkat · 19/05/2023 21:02

Just that really - do you think the name Evie will date badly?
I realise it’s very popular - but not all popular names date eg Amelia, Olivia, Emily, Emma, Charlotte - all popular 30 years ago and still popular now.
What are peoples thoughts please?

It will date like say Chloe and Lauren but I don't see that as a bad thing. My children have names that will make people assume that they are their age or 50 years older than their age 🤷‍♀️

Do you plan a less popular middle name ie not Mae or Rose? My children have much more unusual middle names than their first names which I like.

You were right with "it's"?

Ok. Your second "its" ...should have kept reading

CeeceeBloomingdale · 20/05/2023 12:50

I feel it has already peaked, most of the Evie’s I know are mid to late teens

PossiblyNotOne · 20/05/2023 13:04

I think it will date hugely. Every other girl is an Evie-May/Rose/Grace or Ava/Ivy. It’s so overused.

FatGirlSwim · 20/05/2023 13:29

It’s VERY popular but i don’t think it will date. Ds is 16 and it was popular when he was born. I loved it for a girl but discounted it due to popularity and it’s still popular now.

CindersAgain · 20/05/2023 13:31

I’d put Amelia and Olivia in the same category but not the others. Charlotte maybe had a moment 14 years ago.

RuthW · 20/05/2023 17:41

I'd say it's already dated. Loads between 5-20.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 20/05/2023 19:04

Very.

DuchessOfSausage · 20/05/2023 20:06

@FatGirlSwim , it will date. It was hardly used until about 20 years ago, and now it and similar names are very popular.

In the 1990s, Rebecca was very popular, but it's not even in the top 200 now
In the 1970s Clare/Claire was very popular, but only about 40 girls are registered each year nowadays.
In my mum's age group, Margaret was extremely popular, but wasn't much used after the 1950s.

Fashions change.

I think it will date noticeably, but most popular names will - even classic ones.

There lots of classic boys names that won't date - because they have been consistently very popular for centuries now (think ones like Thomas, James, William, Edward, Alexander, George etc).

I agree this is sometimes less the case for popular girls names though (apart from Elizabeth). But I think by choosing more classic style names like the OP suggests of Emma, Emily, Charlotte etc - many people will know women with those names of quite varied ages so they are unlikely to date badly. I've also met older Eva's and Eve's (though not Evie's), so again I personally don't think of them as solely young girls names.

Name's like Amelia and Olivia might be more risky because they have been the no 1 or 2 name for at least a decade now so could well be much more associated with the post-millennium, despite prominent use historically. Though I suppose I also get the argument that by the time you add all the Eve/Eva/Evelyn/Evie's together they would surpass Amelia and Olivia numbers so when taken collectively could feel quite "2000's" too🤔

Sometherusername · 20/05/2023 22:18

It will definitely date, but I don't think "badly" necessarily. All the Evie's I've met have been perfectly nice children from perfectly nice, normal families so it's not like it's a cliche "posho" or "chav" name or anything like that.

(Speaking as an 80s born Sarah... Yes people can probably guess my age before they meet me, but I don't care, and I don't think they make any other judgements about me (maybe I'm wrong!))

DuchessOfSausage · 21/05/2023 18:03

@IamnotwhouthinkIam , but Evie has been very popular for about 15 years, and the stats for Evie don't include the Evies registered as Eve, Evelyn etc. It's probably by far the most popular name for girls if you used 'known as name'.

It's like saying Theo isn't all that popular, when if you combine Theo with Theodore, it's the top name by far.

Name trends change and the name will say 'born between 2007 and 2027' or something, so yes they will date.

TheaBrandt · 21/05/2023 22:50

Dont do it. There are hundreds of them. It gets terribly confusing. At one point a third of the girls in DD1's class were named a variant of Eve. Sooo bored of it now. Its a perfectly nice name but as are many other names I don't undertstand the insane popularity of this name.

Smartiepants79 · 21/05/2023 23:02

Evie doesn’t make the top 10 girls names right now.
I’m also a teacher and we don’t have a single one in school right now!
4 siennas in the same year group and 5 various Isabel’s but no Evie’s.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 21/05/2023 23:05

@DuchessOfSausage Yes, I agree Evie will probably date to some extent. But if we go just by numbers rather than only the "Ev" names there might be as many Sophie/Sophia/Sofia's for example to have the same feeling -as well as all the Isabella/Isabel/Isabelle's etc. I think it might be more the style of Evie - ie. a more modern nickname style name, just like all the Ellie's, Millie's etc rather than it being solely a numbers issue.

So I personally suspect that Eve and Eva won't feel as dated in the same way in the future. They have been well used enough in the past that I wonder if they might feel more akin to the Sarah's of the 70's and 80's (to use the pp's example) - ie. considered "classic" names, just ones that became especially popular at one point. Similar could be said for my Isabel/a and Sophie/a examples or Amelia and Olivia. This is less likely to be the case for nickname style Evie (unless it manages to stay as well used as them for another few centuries or so!😁)

DuchessOfSausage · 22/05/2023 09:49

There weren't many Eves and Evas in the past, they were only occasionally used.
I'd say it would be more like Debbie or Clare.

Sarah was very popular in the late 1950s and the 1960s but didn't drop from the top 100 until about 5 years ago.

It's strange how there are so many girl's names available, yet there are only a few trends. It seems to be all vowelly and lots of Ls or Vs.

Ellie/Ella names (Eleanor/Elodie/Eliana/Helena etc)
-illy/illie names (Millie/Tilly/Emily/Lily)
Evie/Ava type names (Eve/Eva/Ivy
-ia type names (Sophia, Mia, Thea...)
May type names (Mae, Maya,Maeve, Mabel etc)
Lily/Lila/Luna type names
Long vowelly names like Olivia and Amelia

ImAvingOops · 22/05/2023 10:52

Most names date and those few which don't are considered nice but also 'safe'. Choose the name you really love.
Also don't pick a middle name like May or Louise, just because they 'go' - only choose names you think are fabulous

DuchessOfSausage · 22/05/2023 11:12

I forgot all the Isabel/isabelle/Isabella names and other -bel and -ella names
There are so many Bella and Ellas where I live. Bella seems to be popular for dogs too

SirVixofVixHall · 22/05/2023 11:15

I only know two, one is twenty and the other in her fifties, so quite spread out.

BreviloquentBastard · 22/05/2023 11:30

I considered Evelyn for my daughter (after my grandmother), with Eve or Evie as a nn. Glad I didn't now, there's five of them in her class - although she is 15 so it's obviously remained popular for a long time as it still seems to be going strong.

That said just use whatever name you like. Even if it dates, if you love it it won't matter.

mercibucketedyeo · 22/05/2023 12:31

It's already dated.

Wishy wishy name.

mercibucketedyeo · 22/05/2023 12:31

Wishy washy* Blush

maranella · 22/05/2023 12:33

Evie has been popular for at least 16 years (when I was having my first DC), so there will be no shortage of them in future. I'd go with Eve or Evelyn, if it were me, as it allows for Evie as a nickname, but doesn't limit the DC to only that nickname. Evie on its own is limiting.
