How common is the name Edith where you live

The only name we keep coming back to is the name Edith (I know it will get shortened to Eadie) but reading posts it seems like people think there are loads but looking at darker Greener it was 83rd in 2021 with only 600 born. I was one of 5 with the same name in my class growing up and while I don't want an uncommon name, I'd rather her not go through the full name when in class scenario I went through, so Amelia, Olivia, Sophia etc whilst lovely names they are off any lists.

I know two teen Ediths and one primary aged. I haven't met any baby or toddler ones recently. I like it! It's a lovely name.

Eastie77Returns · 08/05/2023 08:49

The only Edith I actually know is my Aunt. There is an Edie in DD’s school. I know 6 girls called Margot, that is definitely the most popular girls name where I live in London.

Ovaeasy · 08/05/2023 08:58

2 at my dc’s school (& we’re a small school where hardly any names are duplicated). And I know 1 other.

If you’re in the U.K., the ons lists are good to look at for how many babies were given each name in previous years - though of course it doesn’t account for the times when a name suddenly becomes more popular.

Totally understand the desire for a less popular name - I was the same with loads of the same names at school & wanting to avoid it for my dc. I knew those ons lists off by heart!

None l have heard of recently and its a beautiful name.

BodyKeepingScore · 08/05/2023 09:09

I know two Edie's (given name not nn) and one Edith. All at different primary schools though so no issues with more than one being in class etc

Swearwolf · 08/05/2023 09:14

I only know two, plus an Eden.

Turnleftturnright · 08/05/2023 09:19

I don't know of any. I do know of many Edies though and also many other similar sounding names like Evie, Eve ect.

So if Edith was kept as the full name I would like it but shortened for me it just gets so muddled in all the other similar sounding names at the moment. That would bother me as you can't stop people shortening it.

Findyourneutralspace · 08/05/2023 09:22

I know of one who is a preschooler, one who is a teenager and one who is a grandma. I’m in the NW.

0021andabit · 08/05/2023 09:24

It’s a beautiful name. There are a few at our kids school but not so many it feels over used

0021andabit · 08/05/2023 09:25

Sorry, I meant not so many that it feels overused!

trevthecat · 08/05/2023 09:25

My toddler niece is called Edith. I love it.

hettiethehare · 08/05/2023 09:26

There are 3 at DD’s school (one Edith and two Edies). I know one other as well from an old school friend.

hettiethehare · 08/05/2023 09:27

Oh, and actually my new boss has an Edie as well.

Headingforholidays · 08/05/2023 09:28

Lots where we are - both my daughters have one in their class and I know at least 3 others.

yellowmeerkat · 08/05/2023 09:28

I have not come across any

35965a · 08/05/2023 09:29

1 Edith but plenty of Edies

Leftoverssandwich · 08/05/2023 09:30

I know one at secondary (and always Edith, not an Edie) and another at primary (ditto). Neither has met another Edith growing up.

When the secondary one was named it was a minor family sensation as it was such an old-fashioned name, and it definitely wasn’t in the top 100 names. Interesting if it’s crept up so fast! Both the Ediths I know are named after relatives.

Baystar · 08/05/2023 09:34

It's my middle name, sorry but I loathe it (it was my Grandmother's name) I have spent my entire life hiding it, in my 40s now, can't imagine why anyone would choose it😐

WaitingfortheTardis · 08/05/2023 09:39

I think it's not too out there, but not too popular either and is a beautiful, classy name. There have also been some brilliant women who have gone down in history that were called Edith.

Springbuds38 · 08/05/2023 09:44

It’s not so common that you can stuff with the name on in shops, you know like the water bottles, head hands, key rings etc

Pjmasksonrepeat · 08/05/2023 09:48

I know one that's 7. It's never shortened.

SylvanianFrenemies · 08/05/2023 09:50

There is one in the whole of DD's school.
It is not shortened.
Lovely name!

GreenMarigold · 08/05/2023 09:50

I don’t know of any. It’s a lovely name.

elevenplusdilemma · 08/05/2023 09:54

I know quite a few (0-10 years) but it's not super-common. At DC's 2-form entry primary, there are 6 Edith / Edies in total.

FlorisApple · 08/05/2023 10:49

We have an 11yo Edith. Now in Australia, but she has been to two large schools and there haven't been any others at either. Quite a lot of Evies, Evas and Eves though. I still love it, not least because of all the Ediths in the past; Edith Wharton and Edith Piaf etc. And I always liked it as a name that can be sweet for little girls (when shortened to Edie), but also a proper grown up's name when she is an adult. The only thing is, it surprises me how many people say they have never heard it before, and you have to spell it for them.
