How common is the name Edith where you live

The only name we keep coming back to is the name Edith (I know it will get shortened to Eadie) but reading posts it seems like people think there are loads but looking at darker Greener it was 83rd in 2021 with only 600 born. I was one of 5 with the same name in my class growing up and while I don't want an uncommon name, I'd rather her not go through the full name when in class scenario I went through, so Amelia, Olivia, Sophia etc whilst lovely names they are off any lists.

We have an 11yo Edith. Now in Australia, but she has been to two large schools and there haven't been any others at either. Quite a lot of Evies, Evas and Eves though. I still love it, not least because of all the Ediths in the past; Edith Wharton and Edith Piaf etc. And I always liked it as a name that can be sweet for little girls (when shortened to Edie), but also a proper grown up's name when she is an adult. The only thing is, it surprises me how many people say they have never heard it before, and you have to spell it for them.

Wow really! That's interesting I didn't think spelling it would be an issue, not that it bothers me if she does don't we all at some point have to spell our name to someone. I just don't want a name so uncommon you have to spell it everyday.

Thank you ladies for your positive feed back I was waiting for the marmite comments on the name if I'm honest. I'm liking it more and more 😊

Quite common tbh, along with Edith, Edie, lots of Evie's.

PickledScrump · 08/05/2023 18:06

I know quite a few but none under 3. It’s been very popular for around the last 10 years so there are quite a few around.

Funnily enough I don’t know any Sophia’s and the only Olivia I know of is in her 30s.

salamithumbs · 08/05/2023 19:52

I've never met any at all (Dublin). Just looked it up and apparently only 6 babies were named Edith in the whole of Ireland last year!

ThomasinaLivesHere · 08/05/2023 20:05

None. You’re better looking at the name’s rank and the rank of the name in your area than going off comments here. Some people here would say a name ranked 100th most popular was too popular - it’s just a personal preference. In reality it’s just the top 10 to maybe 20 that you’re really going to see a lot of.

I love it - great name
Never met one though despite knowing loads of babies and children

Gemstonebeach · 09/05/2023 10:58

I know a young edie. The only actual Edith i know is my great grandma.

TedLasto · 09/05/2023 14:28

I only know one 8 year old, known as Edie.

kezziecakes · 09/05/2023 14:29

I know several Edens but no Edith. I like it and the nickname Edie.

shoopshoopdedoo · 09/05/2023 14:59

Love it! Know a baby who has it as a middle name, but that’s it. I’d like to be called Edie

MooseBreath · 09/05/2023 19:36

I teach dance to preschool children. In the last year, I have taught 2 Edith's, an Edie, and an Eden.

Londonlady1423 · 09/05/2023 19:51

I know none personally but have met a few out and about at kids groups.
I think it's a lovely name and wouldnt base my name choice off popularity as calling her something unusual doesn't gaurentee there won't be another child with that name

bellsandwhistles333 · 09/05/2023 19:56

Mt best friends had 5 year old twins called Nancy and Edith she fell in love with Edith and still loved it, not the shortened edie only Edith

RightOnTheEdge · 09/05/2023 20:01

I don't know any Ediths, young or old.
It's a lovely name though.

KohlaParasaurus · 09/05/2023 20:03

One 12 year old, one toddler and one farm collie.

bobby81 · 09/05/2023 20:09

I know one Edie. Don't know any Ediths.

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/05/2023 22:20

I know 5 between 3 and 10 and one mid teen. I’d guess it’s dropping off now, but still quite popular.

It’s lovely I agree, and not always nn’d to Edie.

Meredith, Gwyneth, Astrid might be alternatives… also maybe Ethelyn or Enid If you want to reboot another great granny classic. (Ethel is awful but quite like Ethelyn - Effie for short?! And I think Enid is fine.)

89redballoons · 10/05/2023 22:19

I know a 4 year old and a 2 year old Edith/Edie. I'm in the South West.

I think it feels common because Edie is similar to Evie and I know another 3 of those under 5. It is a lovely name though.
