Put my foot in it…🙈

Have you ever completely put your foot in it regarding a chosen baby name?

A couple of years ago, a little boy in my nursery class got a new baby brother. For the first week he didn’t have a name, they just couldn’t decide. On the Friday I asked the little boy what he wanted to call his brother. He answered “Mario, Luigi or Axel”
When mum came to pick him up, we were chatting. I told her what her son had said regarding baby names. Assuming ‘Axel’ was also part of Super Mario, I then said “I don’t know which is worse!”
Her face fell as she told me they had registered the baby that afternoon, and called him Axel. There was nothing I could say.

This was a couple of years ago?

Whataninsight · 07/05/2023 08:18

But to not know what a baby was named and to criticise a name is thoughtless

Whataninsight · 07/05/2023 08:19

Just seen you say on another thread that you work in a nursery

presumably this was a parent of a child you look after at this nursery?

RachyKF · 07/05/2023 09:18

If you read this post, you would also know that…

I feel for you as you could just be saying that to laugh at children using names from games and not really thinking more of it or really meaning to criticise the names.

I do think that nowadays it’s becoming more common for parents to use more diverse names so you do have to be careful. In my kids nursery there’s such a diverse choice of names with choices.

Whataninsight · 07/05/2023 09:24

So this was a couple of years ago?

what made you think of it now??

RachyKF · 07/05/2023 09:28

Oh it was 100% because the little boy loved Super Mario and I had just assumed they were all characters. I felt terrible but I couldn’t really talk my way out of that.

You really do have a bee in your bonnet, don’t you? Maybe you should go and buzz around other posts…

There’s not much you can do, just a life lesson to be more careful with your words.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 07/05/2023 09:30

Their own fault for picking a stupid name. I'm heartless me aren't I! Axel to me makes me think of Axl Rose. Talented man but not someone I'd want to name a beloved son after!!

DelurkingAJ · 07/05/2023 09:31

I once cheerfully told a pregnant colleague that I’d been known as ‘Horace Mathilda’ until I was born as ‘in the 80s those were ridiculous names’. Of course, the name they’d picked for unborn DD was Mathilda. I died. She laughed at me a lot.

Whataninsight · 07/05/2023 09:32

A couple of years - I’m interested what made you start a thread today about it

and - you are a nursery worker. Bit thoughtless as presumably you are aware of lots of out there names 🤷‍♀️

Whataretheodds · 07/05/2023 09:35

Nothing you could do - apologise?

RachyKF · 07/05/2023 09:36

My DH and I had been at a party yesterday. A friend of ours is expecting and we were discussing baby names. This story came up.
I work in a nursery school and we have a lot of very traditional names and some not so. We also have a lot of names from all over the globe. We don’t tend to have many children named after characters from video games chosen by their 3 year old brother though….

Axel is a very common Scandinavian name
To me its as normal as Charles is to British people. Its becoming more common in English speaking countries too.

The lesson here is not to openly criticise the name people chose for their children.

WomanBitingATowel · 07/05/2023 09:39

But it’s a perfectly ordinary name in Scandinavian countries, Germany and France, and not wildly unusual in the UK. I would have thought someone who worked in a nursery would be used to a variety of children’s names, unless you work at Little Englanders R US.

Worked in nursery for 2 decades, never had an Axel or any other unusual name except we had one little girl called Sherri Leigh. Oh and we were criticised by OFSTED for being 100% white & Christian. We lived on a Secure military base in the middle of nowhere and their suggestion was to bus "ethnic" children in, where from i don't know.

Ginnybaby · 07/05/2023 10:07

Can’t see what’s wrong with the names, and the thread is equally as odd. It comes across “I’m mad me”

DustyLee123 · 07/05/2023 12:47

Axel/Axl is a name I’ve heard of, I don’t think it’s a cartoon character.
And I recently met a little girl called Tesla.

Inkypot · 07/05/2023 13:32

@RachyKF I have no idea why anyone's giving you such a hard time on this thread, it's obviously a lighthearted post. Must all have babies named Axel, Luigi and Mario!

I haven't put my foot in it myself but I've had it done to me!
When our daughter was born my husband called his mum to let her know baby had arrived and to tell her the name, weight etc. When she visited us in the hospital later that day she opened with, "Well I first thought you were joking about her name until I told my friends and they pointed out it's actually a real name! Here I was thinking you were taking the piss cos you hadn't decided yet!"
I had no idea how to react but can laugh about it now it's over a decade later (and she loves daughter's name very much now!) So OP you're not alone and for what it's worth I just found it a bit funny. Clearly no harm was intended on your part and Axel is no worse off for it!

Your replies here are thoughtless and mean spirited as well. Maybe start with yourself before you lecture others on being kind and thoughtful.
