Laurie and Rory?? Too similar?

We have a DS names Laurence and goes by Laurie, considering names for DS2 and like Rory a lot but feel it may be too similar to Laurie? Although truly their names Laurence and Rory wouldn’t be all that similar.

I feel like they kind of rhyme and are to samey. Both nice names though.

Cotswoldmama · 05/05/2023 21:32

I like both names and don't really think they're that alike, when I say them they don't rhyme.

sunshineandmango · 05/05/2023 21:34

Rory is great! Don’t think they’re too similar, I’d say go for it

NisekoWhistler · 05/05/2023 21:35

What about Toby instead of Rory

overitunderit · 05/05/2023 21:36

I actually think the issue is that Laurie is pronounced Lorry and Rory is Roar-y but when you see them written down together you read them like Lor-ry and Roar-y or Lorry and Rorry. They are too similar and too confusing together.

JeanieJo · 05/05/2023 21:36

Very similar; but of a tongue-twister to say both!

JuneWind · 05/05/2023 21:36

Depends where you are maybe? I’m SE and Laurie can have a long ‘au’ sound in my accent, which does kind of make it rhyme with Rory.

pictoosh · 05/05/2023 21:42

Yes too similar.

fairycupcakes · 05/05/2023 22:29

I would say Laurie as Lorry and Rory like Roary

Rory is a lovely name. Toby not so much.

Enko · 05/05/2023 22:43

Yes too similar

Ryanstartedthefire2 · 05/05/2023 22:49

Lovely names and not too similar imo. It might depend on your accent tho. I say Aw and Oh for Laurie and Rory. I'm considering both of these names if I have a boy so we have similar taste

Tiredandknackered · 05/05/2023 22:54

Absolutely love Laurie but I think Rory would make it a tongue twister if calling both boys together.

EatTheDamnCake · 05/05/2023 22:56

I think it's fine as Laurie isn't his full name

CornishGem1975 · 05/05/2023 23:05

Makes me think of the Gilmore Girls

Yeah, I tried them out reading the thread and nearly ended up with Rorie and Laury

Awrite · 05/05/2023 23:17

Too similar and a bit of a tongue twister when said together.

I love both names though.

madamsapple · 05/05/2023 23:31

I do like both name but together it's a bit red Laurie yellow Rory :/

Jansetten · 06/05/2023 00:50

Thanks everyone this is kind of what I’ve been thinking that they’re a bit too similar. Possibly could still work though as they won’t be around each other all the time forever, would just have to deal with the tongue twister when calling them.

Thoughts on these maybe instead???
Kit
George
Monty (I like this but don’t love Montague etc)
Percy
Jesse

I like the names independently but not as a pair. They’re too rhymy as siblings imo. How about Leo?

Jansetten · 06/05/2023 00:56

@SarahDippity I like Leo a lot honestly but I know it’s usually short for Leonardo and such which I don’t love.
Would you use it on its own or would you get a lot of people asking if it’s short for something all the time?

Too similar.

SarahDippity · 06/05/2023 01:03

On its own is perfectly acceptable. I know several young Leos. There were several Pope Leos!

SemperIdem · 06/05/2023 01:14

They do sound too similar, granted in a very cute way!

As your son has a proper long name that leans towards French names, maybe Sebastian?

I pronounce Laurie law-ree, not 'lorry'.

It rhymes with Rory.

I'd choose another name.
