Laurie and Rory?? Too similar?

We have a DS names Laurence and goes by Laurie, considering names for DS2 and like Rory a lot but feel it may be too similar to Laurie? Although truly their names Laurence and Rory wouldn’t be all that similar.

@SarahDippity I like Leo a lot honestly but I know it’s usually short for Leonardo and such which I don’t love.
Would you use it on its own or would you get a lot of people asking if it’s short for something all the time?

Leo is a name unto itself, not an abbreviation of Leonardo.

It would honestly never occur to me that it was short for something.

Jansetten · 06/05/2023 01:40

I’ll keep Leo as a maybe then and I also like Sebastian, very cute but still grown up.

I suppose Seb/Sebby could be a nickname?

Bastian is quite common as a nn for Sebastian, in Europe. Maybe less useable in the UK though

Not Jesse. Not in Scotland anyway.

I love Sebastian from your subsequent post.

Really dislike George.

Percy - absolutely not.

Kit is very cool.

I couldn't say Laurie and Rory together! Love Laurie and Sebastian. Rufus ?

Inkypot · 06/05/2023 17:02

Laurie and Rory don't sound the same though so I'm not seeing the confusion here.
Law-ry/ roar-y. Definitely not the same unless you can't pronounce law without adding an oh sound for some reason.
They're both nice names though I'd suggest Rhuaridh instead (Roo-ry) if you're struggling.

Kitcaterpillar · 06/05/2023 17:46

@Inkypot Most people are saying that Laurie ('Lorry') and Rory ('Roary') are difficult to say as a pair rather than sounding identical.

Makes me think of the Gilmore Girls

You beat me to it! 🤣

HAF1119 · 06/05/2023 17:58

I vote Leo :)

This, I’d be worried that in a rush I’d be getting them to rhyme even though they don’t. Saying that they’re both nice names and how often do you say both kids names together 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ah I get what you mean, thanks for helping to make it clear. Tripping over all the r's kind of thing. Yes I suppose it could be muddly to say.

Skybluepinky · 06/05/2023 18:51

Oh not Rory, the tiger from Haven!

Thanks everyone this is kind of what I’ve been thinking that they’re a bit too similar. Possibly could still work though as they won’t be around each other all the time forever, would just have to deal with the tongue twister when calling them.

Thoughts on these maybe instead???
Kit
George
Monty (I like this but don’t love Montague etc)
Percy
Jesse

Kit is great as nn for Christopher and Laurence & Christopher (Laurie & Kit) sounds fab!

There is no O sound in Rory.

That letter O is pronounced AW, as is the 'au' in Laurie.

mathanxiety · 06/05/2023 21:16

Kit is the nicest name from your second list, OP.

Inkypot · 06/05/2023 22:24

@mathanxiety um.. what? How can there be no O sound in Rory? It's Rory?
Maybe an accent thing but saying it myself in my own central Scotland accent and it's very much got an O since it's the second letter and only vowel in there 😂
Never in my life heard anyone change it to an aw sound. It's Rory as in the sound a lion makes with a y on the end 🤷‍♀️

playgroundwarrior · 09/05/2023 20:02

A little hard to say together but that wouldn't be a dealbreaker for me as they're only going to be kids together a lot for a short part of their life. Gorgeous names. Love both.

Ciaonow · 09/05/2023 20:07

Both nice names but I think too similar sounding. Also think they are different styles of names. Sebastian would be a much better match for Laurence style wise. I also really like Kit but would put Christopher on the BC.
