There was a Lucifer in our baby birthday announcements! The following week they printed an apology saying that it was actually the one year old's nickname, not his real one.

edam · 20/02/2008 23:26

bloody nora, puffling, it's bad enough as a nickname but imagine if it was his real name. Eek!

Tinker · 20/02/2008 23:38

Lucifer is actually a nice name though.

igglepiggles · 21/02/2008 14:59

there was a little girl in nursery where i used to work called Praise i thought it was lovely there was also a little boy named fortune!!!

ProfessorGrammaticus · 22/02/2008 22:43

You're joking, Tinker - are't you?

Tinker · 24/02/2008 19:22

No, I like it!

MsHighwater · 24/02/2008 20:38

Re Pocahontas McKenzie, does anyone actually know from direct experience of a child named Pocahontas?

I've heard about this but always as a "someone I know heard it from someone they know" kind of thing. Suspect it could be apocryphal (Please God!)

Tinker, why would you want to call a child after the Devil?

I do know of a Blue-Jean (definitely true)

rantinghousewife · 24/02/2008 20:41

Lucifer? If I knew a Lucifer the very least I'd expect is for his every entry to a room to be preceded by the Omen music. (Can't remember the name of the tune, brain dead today)

queenofthedumbquestion · 24/02/2008 20:42

I once read of a Rocky and Buster, and they weren't the dogs

squeaver · 24/02/2008 20:43

I was walking down Argyle Street in Glasgow maybe 3/4 years ago and I heard a mother shout "hurry up Pocahontas"...

I've also heard of an Ikea.

I've heard there is an Ocean in the south of England, of high school age. I quite like it!

DH wouldn't let me call DD Tiger Lily.

Botbot · 24/02/2008 20:49

Oooh, I heard of a Pocahontas McGinty. Pupil of a friend of a friend, apparently. I've always believed it but perhaps it is an urban myth.

CoteDAzur · 24/02/2008 20:55

Tiger Lily is the daughter of Paula Yates and Michael Hutchence (INXS singer found dead). Funny that the name seems to have found acceptance.

Boco · 24/02/2008 20:58

My niece used to go to school with a little girl called Ikea.

Puffling, I remember that too... I just checked your profile and see you are from MCR. Was it in the MEN or the local paper? Are you from North Manchester?

BroccoliSpears · 24/02/2008 21:03

I love unusual names. I also love traditional names.

I never quite understand why people chunter crossly (or worse, snigger) when a child is given an unusual name.

My SIL once gave me a huge lecture about how my daughter would never be taken seriously by the bank manager because we've given her a nickname as a real name.

suedonim · 24/02/2008 21:04

At dd2's school there's a girl called 'Golden' although dd says there's nothing whatsoever golden about her, and a boy called 'Victory'......

Spidermama · 24/02/2008 21:04

I love Tiger Lilly.
Atlanta is a fine name and I have known two.
I'm not keen on the others but I don't hate them and I'd rather have a Gypsy than a Chloe and a Duran than a Jack.

Each to her own though eh?

clairebear88 · 24/07/2008 10:24

Hi

I just wish I had the guts to name my child something wacky as some of them are pretty ( ocean /atlanta )
A friend of a friend has called her little girl Truly scrumptious ( honestly ) sad thing is she is a twin and the other girl has a normal name. If your gonna go for it I think all your kids have to follow suit

Fimbo · 24/07/2008 10:28

There is a child named Ikea somewhere in Britain (read about it in the paper)

princessglitter · 24/07/2008 10:30

There was a boy called Red at dd1's nursery and a little girl called Ocean at toddler group.

We had to sing the goodbye song at the end and I had to try and keep a straight face whilst singing: 'Goodbyeee Ocean...'

Fimbo · 24/07/2008 10:31

Sure enough, there was an Ikea born in the UK, but it was more than three years ago.

Linda Dagless, who was 26 at the time, named her fourth daughter after the furniture store in May 2002.

At the time, she told her local paper in Norwich: "I was pregnant, sitting on the sofa with my boyfriend and trying to think of a name for the little girl I was going to have when I noticed the Ikea advert.

"I saw the name Ikea and thought it would make a nice name for my baby.

"I have seen the Ikea adverts on the telly and in magazines and thought they always had nice furniture, but I've never been to the shop. I'm now planning to go there with my mum."

You can guess where I live can't you?

DeeRiguer · 24/07/2008 10:35
