Ella?

Hi team

I posted a month or so ago regarding -Elle names. Thought we had settled on Arielle but DH seems to have gone off this recently after initially loving it. He is worried it sounds too fussy/pretentious. I still really like it.
Feel like we’d considered every -Elle type name going but realised we had completely overlooked Ella, perhaps because I felt it was too popular (one of our friends from nursery has an Ella, although don’t think this would be a deal breaker).
What are people’s thoughts? Is it too common / bland? Do you think it will date badly or is it more in the classics category given its duration of popularity?
DH wants Flora, which seems pretty popular on here although I don’t know any in real life. I think it’s pretty but struggling with the spread association as I keep seeing it advertised on TV! He also likes Poppy.

soooo….
Ella
Arielle
Flora
Poppy
??? Other suggestions

Please help!!

Ella - popular and blends into all the Ellie/-ella/-bella/-elle names
Arielle - a bit frilly
Flora - lovely
Poppy - nice

LlynTegid · 03/05/2023 11:46

Flora is a margarine.

Like Ella myself.

TeapotCollection · 03/05/2023 11:50

Ella is lovely

Any name with 3 syllables or more almost always gets shortened so I’d avoid Ariella

Reugny · 03/05/2023 11:50

Ella - bog standard name of girls born in this era.
Arielle - agree with a PP that it is very frilly. Risk of being shortened to "elle"
Flora - the women I have met called this name are 50+
Poppy - met lots of girls and women called this.

MattDamon · 03/05/2023 11:51

Luella? Although she'd probably get Lu/Lulu as a nn rather than Ella.

MyOtherUsernameIsDave · 03/05/2023 12:11

Find Ella really bland and overused.

SneezyEvie · 03/05/2023 12:23

There is nothing wrong with Ella but I find it quite a boring name.

Poppy is sweet but a little babyish.

Arielle just sounds like Sebastian saying Ariel in my head from The Little Mermaid.

Flora gets my vote. Classy, pretty, works well on an adult and a baby.

fairycupcakes · 03/05/2023 13:35

Flora is a margarine and I can only ever think that when someone introduces themselves/their Dd with this name. How about Fleur instead?

Ella really is quite bland and blends into all the other Ellie,-Elle, -Ella, Vowel-heavy names that are very of the now.

Arielle is quite pretty actually and I love the name Poppy - have known little ones and grown women with this name and it suits them all so well.

DuchessOfSausage · 03/05/2023 13:37

As I never buy margarine, the Flora comment seems a bit odd. Willow is a spread but nobody comments on that.

jasminesunflower · 03/05/2023 14:25

Ella - it's cute, but it feels a bit empty and hollow somehow. I can't explain why. It will date, it is already a bit dated, but not that badly because overall it's still a classic. There are many around, but most are in their 20s and 30s. I think she won't have many Ellas in her class, but some of her classmates' mums might be called Ella.

Arielle - this is cute, but I'm kind of tired of Ari-names. Ariana and Arianna were quite popular here for a while and there's Aria and Arya too. They all feel a bit tired and 2020s.

Poppy - cute, bright, happy. But maybe a bit childish. This is also a name that could be considered funny outside of English speaking countries, so if you are planning on moving I'd make sure it doesn't sound odd in that country.

Flora - sorry, but I dislike this and it is by far the worst on your list. I'm so over Florence and Flora reminds me of "intestinal flora",

Suggestions:

Ellie - has more substance to me than Ella somehow but also more dated
Elle
Ellen
Eleanor or Elinor
Nellie or Nelly
Nella
Mariella
Marielle
Maribel
Mirabel
Eliana
Isabelle
Isabella
Annabel
Annabella
Bella
Belle
Ariella
Luella
Mirabella

I like Flora best. Do love Ella too but more popular for sure.

sunshineandmango · 03/05/2023 18:25

Thank you for your replies and suggestions. I should have mentioned on the original thread, I also like Elodie.

OP posts:
anotherscroller · 03/05/2023 18:27

Too girly for me

anotherscroller · 03/05/2023 18:27

elodie is a bit more sophisticated and I like it

DuchessOfSausage · 03/05/2023 18:35

Elodie is OK but again blends into all the Ellie/Ella names and seems nothingy.
Most of the most popular names seem vowelly and the main consonants L or V.

baklavagoddess · 03/05/2023 18:40

Ariella?
Louella?

DuchessOfSausage · 03/05/2023 18:41

Cinderella?

mosiacmaker · 03/05/2023 18:45

Elodie is beautiful and I don’t think it’s the same as all the Ellas etc. But you could nickname an Elodie “Ella” if you wanted - but at least they would have a choice when older. I like Fleur too instead of Flora

Cotswoldmama · 03/05/2023 18:46

Love Ella or Elle. I really hate Arielle it makes me think of the way Sebastian from the little mermaid pronounces Ariel! But also it's a bit too frilly.

Cotswoldmama · 03/05/2023 18:48

I'm not sure about Elodie, I think Melody is nicer but then that would be shortened Mel, which is a bit meh. If Elodie is just going to be shortened to Elle then I'd just use Elle.

Cotswoldmama · 03/05/2023 18:50

Eleanor, Eleanora, Elise?

Worriedmotheroftwo · 03/05/2023 19:11

Ella is my favourite.

ourflagmeansdeath · 03/05/2023 19:38

Ella - It's fine but plain and popular
Arielle - I actually find this really pretty
Flora - Gorgeous
Poppy - This is sweet!
Elodie - It is absolutely beautiful

How about Eloise?

shoopshoopdedoo · 03/05/2023 20:29

Love Flora and Ella. Flora is used a lot less, so I’d pick that!

Poppy is OK. Not a fan of Arielle personally, I agree it’s a bit “frilly”, and I’m not keen on the sound.

EatTheDamnCake · 03/05/2023 20:34

Ella is a bit overdone, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. I sometimes think it's better having a common name as nobody ever associates it with a specific dickhead with the same name 😂

I don't like how Ella is said in the SE England (Ellaaaaah) or in the north (Ellugh) so that puts me off it. But if you love how it sounds then go for it. The popularity alone wouldn't bother me
