Ella?

Hi team

I posted a month or so ago regarding -Elle names. Thought we had settled on Arielle but DH seems to have gone off this recently after initially loving it. He is worried it sounds too fussy/pretentious. I still really like it.
Feel like we’d considered every -Elle type name going but realised we had completely overlooked Ella, perhaps because I felt it was too popular (one of our friends from nursery has an Ella, although don’t think this would be a deal breaker).
What are people’s thoughts? Is it too common / bland? Do you think it will date badly or is it more in the classics category given its duration of popularity?
DH wants Flora, which seems pretty popular on here although I don’t know any in real life. I think it’s pretty but struggling with the spread association as I keep seeing it advertised on TV! He also likes Poppy.

soooo….
Ella
Arielle
Flora
Poppy
??? Other suggestions

Please help!!

Ella is fine, but nondescript. Doesn’t it literally mean “she” in Italian? I can’t imagine anything more bland than a pronoun tbh.

sunshineandmango · 03/05/2023 22:20

@FirstFallopians I thought Ella meant goddess but it may well translate as that in Italian as it is very close to Elle, which of course is a pronoun in French. Doesn’t really bother me though.

My DD is Ellia, pronounced Ellie-a. I love it and always get lots of compliments on it.

sunshineandmango · 03/05/2023 22:28

@ohfacksake oh that’s a beautiful name. Never come across an Ellia before. Definitely one to take to DH!

Flora - it’s lovely

Ella and it’s variations are done to death, Arielle is Disney and Poppy is wet.

I have an Ella. She’s 20 and absolutely loves her name. Her best friend is also an Ella.
I still love it as much if not more than when I named her.
It’s classic, it, elegant.
Shes named after Ella Fitzgerald.

It may be popular, but I don’t care one iota about that.

She’s had the odd one at school, dance classes over the years but that’s it.

pinkpanther84 · 03/05/2023 22:54

I love Ella, I think it's beautiful. Love Elodie too

Ella - it's cute, but it feels a bit empty and hollow somehow. I can't explain why. It will date, it is already a bit dated, but not that badly because overall it's still a classic. There are many around, but most are in their 20s and 30s. I think she won't have many Ellas in her class, but some of her classmates' mums might be called Ella.

Arielle - this is cute, but I'm kind of tired of Ari-names. Ariana and Arianna were quite popular here for a while and there's Aria and Arya too. They all feel a bit tired and 2020s.

Poppy - cute, bright, happy. But maybe a bit childish. This is also a name that could be considered funny outside of English speaking countries, so if you are planning on moving I'd make sure it doesn't sound odd in that country.

Flora - sorry, but I dislike this and it is by far the worst on your list. I'm so over Florence and Flora reminds me of "intestinal flora",

Suggestions:

Ellie - has more substance to me than Ella somehow but also more dated
Elle
Ellen
Eleanor or Elinor
Nellie or Nelly
Nella
Mariella
Marielle
Maribel
Mirabel
Eliana
Isabelle

Annabel
Annabella
Bella

Ariella
Luella
Mirabella

It definitely won’t date.
it’s been around since the 1890’s.

MidsummerNightsDream · 03/05/2023 23:01

Elodie is nice but Eloise is lovelier.

Redebs · 03/05/2023 23:05

Ella is nice, unless - like a science teacher i worked with once - you've already got a Sam. (Yes really! 😖)

Cats23 · 03/05/2023 23:05

Ella is so so popular,I know babies, toddlers, pre teens, teens and adults with the name in our small area!
Flora - I do think of the butter.
Poppy- Also popular, I know 4 ( age around 6-10)
Elodie- Im not so keen
Arielle - the 'Ari' names are super popular too.

Sorry Op! Ultimately,my opinion doesnt matter though!

sunshineandmango · 04/05/2023 08:24

Thanks all, really interesting to read your thoughts. DH definitely prefers Ella to Arielle and I think it is more classic and elegant.
A few suggestions of Eloise which although lovely, I’m not a big fan of Louise which is all I seem to hear with this name.
seems pretty mixed views on the others but guess that will always be the case with names, so subjective!

It will still date.

Rachel is dated now and it has been around pretty much forever. Same with Deborah or Sarah or Susan.

It will come back again and again for sure, but inbetween it will sound dated, just like Susan sounds dated now.

mrsgreggspastry · 04/05/2023 11:54

I prefer Elodie- you could still shorten it to Ella so best of both worlds.

sunshineandmango · 04/05/2023 16:17

@Theoldwoman so lovely to hear your daughter loves her name! Would hate to land DD with a name which she grew up to dislike, which is why I’m cautious about using Flora. Seems divided opinions on whether this may be an issue or not.
Someone on this thread mentioned gut flora which is even worse than the marg issue! 😬
Not keen on Fleur or Florence as alternatives.
