Under the radar yet classic boy's names?

TheBirdintheCave · 26/04/2023 11:59

Unfortunately, my last pregnancy ended in my second miscarriage in December. We're now just about to start our first IVF cycle (first stim tonight!) so have been talking about names again. With IVF we're apparently 6% more likely to have a boy (!) so, with that in mind:

1: What would you choose from our current list?
2: What else would you suggest that is similar?

I'd describe our style as being under the radar yet classic and we currently have one son called Gilbert.

Current list:

Edmond* (nn Ned)
Julian (or Jolyon)
Conrad
Colin
Leonard
Jory**

Middle names would be Richard Anthony (or the other way around).

*The French spelling after my great granddad.
** Husband is half Cornish so more Cornish options would be nice too.

I like a classic name with a more interesting nickname. Like Andrew (Drew), Oliver (Oli) etc. From your list I like Leonard.

DistrictCommissioner · 26/04/2023 12:16

Jago
Petroc
Perrin

Firebird83 · 26/04/2023 12:17

I like Edmond (prefer Edmund spelling), Julian, Conrad, Leonard and Jory.

How about…

Bernard
Cedric
Edwin
Laurence/Lawrence
Edgar
Justus
Harold
Robin
Francis
Jago
Jowan
Austell
Lowen
Gregory
Ivor
Julius
Raymond
Horatio
Isidore
Josiah
Piran or Perran
Pasco/Pascoe
Yestin (Cornish form of Justin)
Jeremiah
Lucian
Abraham
Kirrin
Morris
Nicholas
Oswin
Quintin
Matthias
Peter
Solomon
Amos
Thaddeus
Petroc
Taran

TheBirdintheCave · 26/04/2023 12:19

@DistrictCommissioner Oh I do love Jago but it's really gaining in popularity right now 😕

I’d choose Edmond from your list. I wound use it myself though as I don’t love Ed/Eddie. As much I might start off with Ted/Ned/Mondo as nicknames I like, he might want to be an Eddie when he’s old enough to have an opinion and that’s not for me to control. Other names which feel kinda similar are:
Ambrose
August
Benedict
Gideon
Jago
Lucien
Marius
Raphael

PickledScrump · 26/04/2023 12:25

I like Ned, I really like Colin though. It’s not one that I think will make a massive comeback anytime soon but more because people don’t think of it than because it’s unpleasant

traytablestowed · 26/04/2023 12:26

Wow you're so organised 🤩 best of luck with your IVF!
Ps. I didn't know that Cornish names existed but this is a very sweet way to make a more common name personal to you guys.

TheBirdintheCave · 26/04/2023 12:27

@Firebird83 Funnily enough Horatio and Isidore are on my 'out there' list but I'm not sure I could get husband on board with either 😂 Gilbert and Horatio sound amazing as a sibset.

Harold we liked for a while but ultimately discounted as we really dislike Harry as a nickname and know everyone would default to that.

I'll float Lowen, Perran, Pascoe and Lucian past my husband :)

Theoldwoman · 26/04/2023 12:30

I love Julian.

Some suggestions:

Bentley
Weston
Christian
Gage
Corbin
Ernest
Vance
Wade
Ayrton
Quentin
Kurt
Jacques
Angus
Layton
Lincoln
Reeve
Evan
Fraser
Ewan

ZenNudist · 26/04/2023 12:31

I don't think Jago is too popular.

I didn't like Edmond as i prefer Edmund spelling but if theres a family connection then go for that. He will spend his life spelling it. Can't go wrong with Ed!

I do like Julian. If you want to be difficult could spell it Julien like my friendwhich i always think is a nice (french) way to spell it.

Conrad is very different , quite an American 'strong' name. I dont love it but its OK.

Leonard nn Leo is good, not Len!

Jory is awful and rhymes with Tory.

Jolyon is also hideous and pretentious.

Sebastian probably too popular for you?

How about Tobias?

TheBirdintheCave · 26/04/2023 12:33

@traytablestowed Aww thanks :) I'm autistic and organisation is one of my strengths.

@PickledScrump It's really growing on me.

@toastofthetown I love August so much but, probably something I should have mentioned earlier, we have an 'iss' sound in the middle of our very short F starting surname (think Fish or Fliss) which rules out a lot of names with softer sounds, especially when they fall near the end.

TheBirdintheCave · 26/04/2023 12:40

@ZenNudist I did take a look at Tobias and Sebastian but they're both in the top 100 now (which was a surprise!) so are no goes for me I'm afraid.

If we picked Leonard he would be Lenny, yes 😂

I'd totally forgotten about Conrad until yesterday but, like Colin, it's really growing on me. I do like that 'strong' sound :)

@Theoldwoman Ernest, Quentin and Evan are all ones I've considered in the past but discounted for various reasons. Some of your other suggestions seem a little bit too surnamey or modern for my tastes I'm afraid! Thanks though :)

no more likely to have a boy through ivf than naturally! I like all your choices though. Edmond or Andrew are my favourite from this thread

TheBirdintheCave · 26/04/2023 12:51

@Nimbostratus100 I originally thought that too but apparently it is the case according to various studies over the past ten years. It's not a massive increase in chance of course, just fractional, so I could still end up with a girl 😅

but it is the same increase if you are not ivf. More boys are always born, and die at a faster rate too, so under 40, more males than females, over 40 more females

TheBirdintheCave · 26/04/2023 12:56

@Nimbostratus100 Huh... I never considered it in context of the general population before. I've only been looking in a vacuum. Still, with my luck it'll be a boy anyway as I want a girl 😂

Thelastofbus · 26/04/2023 12:56

Laurence is a great underused name with lots of nn possibilities. I like both Laurie and Ren.

TheBirdintheCave · 26/04/2023 12:56

@Thelastofbus One of those is my name ;)

Theoldwoman · 26/04/2023 12:58

I see Gilbert as a surname 😂

Austin
Sullivan
Mason
Beauden
Wyatt
Hudson
Oakley
Cyril
Gordon
Victor
Wyndham
Edgar
Robin

@DistrictCommissioner Oh I do love Jago but it's really gaining in popularity right now 😕

Have you looked on Darker Greener? There were 83 babies called Jago in 2021. For context, Oliver was 4,167 in 2021.
for further context, there were 199 babies with my DD’s name the year she was born & we’ve never met any of them.

Mazza7412 · 26/04/2023 13:05

My youngest is called Christopher.
I literally went through the names and chose one that wasn’t in the top 50 list. My eldest is Thomas and had 5 in his class and hated it. So he’s now known as Tom.

I work in childcare and have noticed a lot of the older fashioned names are coming back again which is lovely.

massive good luck with IVF

TheBirdintheCave · 26/04/2023 13:06

@DistrictCommissioner Yeah I practically live on Dark Greener 😂 I think I panic when I see a name is on the climb especially as Gilbert is so, so rare. Anything that has a rank above 500 seems really popular in comparison even though in reality it's probably not 😅

@Theoldwoman It is also a surname, yes :)

Willowtre1 · 26/04/2023 13:07

@traytablestowed I thought your response a bit odd, I don't think it's wow so organised to think about names, just a fun part of planning for a family! Plus I think op is looking for under used, not common names?

@TheBirdintheCave what about Tristan, Ruan, Lowen for Cornish options

Cornishmumofone · 26/04/2023 13:07

If you like Gilbert, what about Gillam?

I've only met females called Lowen.

TheBirdintheCave · 26/04/2023 13:07

@Mazza7412 Yeah my brother was one of about ten Michaels in his year group which he loathed. And thanks!
