Under the radar yet classic boy's names?

TheBirdintheCave · 26/04/2023 11:59

Unfortunately, my last pregnancy ended in my second miscarriage in December. We're now just about to start our first IVF cycle (first stim tonight!) so have been talking about names again. With IVF we're apparently 6% more likely to have a boy (!) so, with that in mind:

1: What would you choose from our current list?
2: What else would you suggest that is similar?

I'd describe our style as being under the radar yet classic and we currently have one son called Gilbert.

Current list:

Edmond* (nn Ned)
Julian (or Jolyon)
Conrad
Colin
Leonard
Jory**

Middle names would be Richard Anthony (or the other way around).

*The French spelling after my great granddad.
** Husband is half Cornish so more Cornish options would be nice too.

@Cornishmumofone Ah sorry if I wasn't clear. My existing son is called Gilbert :)

I don't know much about Lowen as today is the first I've heard of it. Funnily enough it's as 'popular' 😂 as Jago according to Dark Greener so I'm surprised I've not come across it before.

@Willowtre1 I assumed she meant the way I'd written the post 😅

Not the most interesting list, but it has some Cornish names.

I'm finding it difficult to find Cornish boys names not already well known and aren't completely horrendous lol.

Here's a female medieval Cornish name, Meraud. Forbears says there's 13 in the whole world, 4 in England.

Given Names I, OLD-ENGLISH

@traytablestowed I thought your response a bit odd, I don't think it's wow so organised to think about names, just a fun part of planning for a family! Plus I think op is looking for under used, not common names?

@TheBirdintheCave what about Tristan, Ruan, Lowen for Cornish options

Tbh I just wanted to say good luck with the IVF and didn't think very carefully about the rest of it. But thanks for flagging it as odd 😂

TheBirdintheCave · 26/04/2023 15:51

@eatdrinkandbemerry I love Ralph but it doesn't work with our surname (plus we have a baby nephew named Rafe now).

@Polzair Meraud is one I love but I don't think my husband likes it :(

I realise why you're using the Edmond spelling, but he will spend his entire life correcting it- please don't do it!

My ds's best friend is Ivo. Worth a thought?

Justaponder · 27/04/2023 07:10

One I thought if that I can't see mentioned is Basil. Perhaps not to your taste, but I would consider under the radar and traditional.

DipperandMabel · 27/04/2023 10:00

I like the name @Firebird83 suggested - Kirrin, that’s lovely.

From your list though I would pick Leonard, it goes well with Gilbert and there are good nickname potentials. The only name I’m not keen on from your list is Julian as I always think of two things - Julian Clary or a toff.

TheBirdintheCave · 27/04/2023 10:20

I ran some of these names past husband last night. He likes all of the Cornish ones I mentioned but we both agree they just don't feel quite right with Gilbert for some reason.

He likes Lucian a lot more than I expected him to which was a nice surprise so that's officially on the list now. I keep trying to get him on board with Conrad but he's not a fan 😂 Malcolm and Dorian were another two we realised we both liked, though Dorian's lack of history taints it a little for me.

Edmond is still number one for us I think. In terms of spelling, I appreciate that the French way is not the go to but I'm pretty sure all Catherine/Katherines get by ok as do the myriad of Isobel/Isabelle/Ysabel/Ishbels etc. Even I have to spell my name out every time I say it and haven't found it too tedious yet after 36 years 😅

Thanks to everyone for all of your suggestions/responses thus far! I'll make a new list as/when we get pregnant and hopefully can refine some of our choices a little more.

Drystan
Eben

AlyssumandHelianthus · 27/04/2023 10:26

Jolyon sounds like slang for an erection. He's got a Jolyon, watch out!

What about John? Very few babies named John these days and it's a classic.
Or Michael?
Or Bernard?

lauraslops · 27/04/2023 15:36

Out of your list I think Edmond and Conrad go best with your current son Gilbert. Best of luck with your IVF journey.
