No. Use the name you love.
Sophias are not running amok in my street.

HAF1119 · 22/04/2023 06:28

Never met a Sophia

Lovely name choice :)

autienotnaught · 22/04/2023 06:36

That was my choice if we had a girl. One Sophia in my sons school year. I'd say it's popular but not overused.

CastleTower · 22/04/2023 06:41

About 0.6% of babies were called Sophia last year (and 0.4% called Sophie and 0.5% Sofia).

That's less than one per primary school class on average. Only you can decide if that's too many!

Oneglassisnotenough · 22/04/2023 06:44

Gorgeous but I still prefer Sophie.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 22/04/2023 06:50

its popular but I think that’s fine

pancakesandpepsi · 22/04/2023 07:03

Apparently it’s in the top 10 but I haven’t encountered any. If you love it go for it!

Thequeenofwishfulthinking · 22/04/2023 07:05

I’m teach Year 2. I’ve not had a Sophia for 10 years in my class. I’m not keen but prefer it to Sophie.

SofiaAmes · 22/04/2023 07:07

Ok, I'm a little biased, but I think it's a fantastic name. But I do suggest you spell it properly...Sofia

SingLikeADuck · 22/04/2023 07:12

Yes I know tonnes. They usually have the middle name Grace or Rose too. I know about 3 called Sophia Grace.

SneezyEvie · 22/04/2023 07:21

Yes, it’s popular but it’s a beautiful name.

choochooandspook · 22/04/2023 07:46

I only know one and she's the only one in the school. I prefer the spelling sophia

PrangKdcu · 22/04/2023 07:56

Yes it is very popular, if you combine Sophia and Sofia it’s probably the most popular girls name. Saying that though, I don’t personally know any (apart from I know there are three in one class at school, none in my sons year though). It is beautiful and also much more distinctive than a lot of the current popular names. It doesn’t blend with the endless Isla, Ava, Ada, Maya, Mia, Lyla, Lyra, Lola etc etc that make those names seem more overdone.

PickledScrump · 22/04/2023 08:22

It’s pretty popular and quite bland. But definitely a sage choice. They always seem to get shortened to soph which isnt very nice

moonspiral · 22/04/2023 08:22

If you love it you must use it or you'll kick yourself.

RobertaTheRotund · 22/04/2023 08:43

It's been fairly popular for ages, so while I don't meet tonnes of them, it does seem quite a boring choice to me. But, boring is not always bad. Everyone will be able to spell it and say it. It's pretty and it travels well.

I meet a lot of kids whose names it takes me a few tries to say properly as they're so unusual. That isn't any more memorable than something like Sophia. Almost the opposite.

The most interesting, memorable names I hear are things like Michelle, Sarah or Rachel, as they're names I 'get' straight away but you don't hear much these days.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 22/04/2023 08:43

My DD is Sofia with middle name Rose. The Rose is after my nan and the Sofia is a continuation of my DH having a Polish name so we went for European sounding. I realise fully polish is Zofia but I preferred Sofia. I think there is only one other Sophia in her year. Loads of Rose middle names though. She is 10 for context.

My DD hates being called Soph lol

toastofthetown · 22/04/2023 08:53

Sophia and Sofia’s popularity combined puts it at #1 on the charts, ahead of Olivia. It’s also considered by some surveys to be the most popular girls name in the world when all regional variants are combined, so if she grows up and works for an international company she’ll probably be with Sophie, Sofia, Zsofia etc.

Name popularity is regional, there will be some areas swarming with Sof/phias and some where a Sophia would be the only one in her year or school, but I’d swerve Sofia if I wanted something unusual, and meeting lots of other girls with her name will bother you. The Dark Greener website is great if you want to check out UK name popularity.

Fuerza · 22/04/2023 08:55

I prefer Sophie too. I know Sophie is more popular but Sophia seems a bit to long drawn out in comparison.

CornishGem1975 · 22/04/2023 08:56

It's always up there on lists but in 17 years my DD has never had a Sophia (or a Sophie) in any of her years at school. I don't actually know one IRL either.

Thatbloomindog · 22/04/2023 08:57

It’s a beautiful name. I like it a lot.
There are 6 in our primary school of 120 children.
And like another poster said there is a Sophia-Mae , Sophia Grace and a Sophia Rose. I don’t know the others well enough for their middle names.

My Sofia is the only one I know of in her school.

Muu · 22/04/2023 10:15

it is popular and if that bothers you don’t use it. But names are popular for a reason, and Sophia is a good name.

my husband wanted to call our daughter Sophia but I’ve met so many Sophie/Sophias (including one adult who is a bit of an arse) that I said no. We chose a name which is actually a bit more popular, but I’ve only ever met one so I didn’t care!

FayCarew · 22/04/2023 10:42

@SofiaAmes , Sophia and Sofia are both correct spellings, but Sofia to me looks too close to Sofa.

@saltandpepper86 , it is very popular if you consider Sophia/Sofia (3690 registered in England & Wales in 2021), and Sophia has been very popular for a years. It's still less popular than Noah.

If you love it, use it, but if you have a fairly ordinary surname choose a middle name that is not a standard filler one.
