Yes I know tonnes. They usually have the middle name Grace or Rose too. I know about 3 called Sophia Grace.

Just out of curiosity how old are they? I have a teenage Sophia Rose and honestly didn't think it was popular at the time. I'd never met or heard of one and now it seems like I've given her the "Gary" or "Susan" name of her generation haha.

HappyMe6 · 22/04/2023 12:12

Lovely name and also sophie

Starlitestarbright · 22/04/2023 12:14

I also prefer Sophie I'm biased as my girl is Sophie but it sounds softer than Sophia.

Barleysugar86 · 22/04/2023 12:15

I know a couple. I prefer Sophie, I think it seems a little less try hard.

RobertaTheRotund · 22/04/2023 12:17

I also prefer Sophie

FayCarew · 22/04/2023 12:17

I prefer Sophie too, but Sophia could always go by Sophie if she chooses.

choochooandspook · 22/04/2023 15:46

i love the name sophia, there were loads of girls called sophie in the 80s.

Londonlady1423 · 22/04/2023 15:49

I think Sophia seems more modern than Sophie. I would say it's common as in most people have heard or known someone called Sophia however I don't think it's as popular so not so many babies called it in recent years.
Regardless if you love the name go for it. You'll probably regret it if you call her something else and then a friend calls their baby it

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 22/04/2023 18:25

Sophia with the traditional English pronunciation ('eye' instead of 'ee') and the diminutive Sophy is one of my favourite girls' names of all time but I ruled it out when I had DD. It was partly because I knew we would never get our preferred pronunciation and she would have spent her life correcting people, and partly because it was too popular for me. I can't tell you if it's too popular for you, however.

miniaturepixieonacid · 22/04/2023 20:41

I teach 3 currently (across an age 7-13 school, not all in one class) but they are all spelled Sofia. No Sophias. Not sure if that's coincidence or whether Sophia is more unusual. Only one of the Sofias is British.

Growlybear83 · 22/04/2023 21:02

Why does it matter if it's a very popular name if you like it?

Highdaysandholidays1 · 22/04/2023 21:05

Sophia or Sofia is popular all across Europe, which is why I reckon lots of international families have Sofias, usually spelt that way. It's a great international name.

CaffeineFirstPlease · 22/04/2023 21:06

It was my girls name but I had a boy. Think it’s lovely. We were planning on spelling it Sofia tho

Cece92 · 22/04/2023 21:08

My DD is Sophia she is nearly 10.I hadn't known any or heard of anyone having any DC Sophia. There are 3 Sophias in her primary year. All 3 were in the same class primary 1. There's now 2 classes she's the only Sophia in here's and the other 2 in the other class. They get referred to Sophia A B or C 😂 I'm still glad I called her Sophia it suits her and actually other than those 3 I don't know any others xxx

TheSnowyOwl · 22/04/2023 21:10

It’s a lovely name. At my children’s school there is one but she spells it Sofiia which I haven’t seen at all before.

Whilst it might be very popular, there are still hundreds of thousands of babies called something else. It’s also not the sort of name to age badly either.

OnceBitten25 · 22/04/2023 21:43

I love Sophia - it was my great gran's name so am possibly biased!

milkysmum · 22/04/2023 22:26

My daughter is Sophia. She's 14 and we don't know any others.
She occasionally gets her name shortened to Soph which she doesn't like. We use the nickname Phia at home.

COPPER3 · 22/04/2023 22:48

I love Sophia! One of my all time favourite girls names.
Much prefer it to Sophie which was very popular at one time.

It will be shortened to Soph....so be aware of this.

teachermummyme · 22/04/2023 22:55

I get that you can't argue with the name data (I don't know what number it is in the top name data but from previous comments I gather it must be high) but that said, I've been a primary school teacher for 12 years and have never taught a Sophia or known one in other classes. I've only ever taught one Sophie. So at least where I live it's not that popular!

Viviennemary · 23/04/2023 00:18

I much prefer Sophie.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 23/04/2023 11:26

“Too popular” is subjective. You get people rejecting names which are ranked 300th because they’re too popular for them.

Nowadays there’s so much diversity in names compared to when we were kids that you’re much less likely to have multiples of kids with the same name in classes.

If you really love a name don’t settle for one you like less just because it’s not so popular as you could end up with another girl with the same name in your kid’s friends and no Sophias.

LaVitesse2022 · 24/04/2023 20:44

Sophia, Sophie, Sofia are all absolutely gorgeous names. Classic, timeless and international.

As others have said, why does it matter if it's popular if you love it? It may be popular but it's not a fad name, so it will age well.

Carsarelife · 24/04/2023 20:54

4 Sophia's at nursery

Daffodilwoman · 24/04/2023 22:08

I think it’s a lovely name.
