Dora variants

cottinger · 21/04/2023 16:30

I love Dora but DH wants an unusual name and has agreed we can have a longer version of Dora but has ruled out Dorathy, Dorothea, and Theodora.

What possible variants are there are Dora which are more unique?

I love Adora (does it sound like Andora?) and I also saw Apollidora but its a but of a mouthful and I don't like the nn Polly.

I would preferably like the name to start Dora... rather than end in it just so Dora is an obvious nn but am open minded. Any ideas?

Dorinda - coined in the 18th century and used occasionally since.

Dorcas - Greek name in the New Testament and in snd out of fashion since the 16th century.

Isadora is beautiful as a PP has suggested even though it doesn't start with Dora.

I love Adora too so that would be great if both you and your DH like it.

Doranna maybe??

cottinger · 21/04/2023 17:37

I like Doranna but I also think it sounds a bit like a board game. My sister is Isabel so Isadora feels too similar.

Dorinda sounds too old-fashioned for my taste.

Doriana is an Italian name. Any good?

ColdHandsHotHead · 21/04/2023 17:49

Dorota.

Crumbcatcher · 21/04/2023 18:01

Dorabella, like Elgar's Dorabella cipher.

getafringenotbotox · 21/04/2023 18:06

Dorabella. That is beautiful

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 21/04/2023 18:13

Dora in its own right is a very unusual name. Only 31 of them born in 2021 in E&W.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 21/04/2023 18:14

Depends if DH wants ‘unusual’ in the sense of ‘not frequently used’ or ‘not widely known’, I suppose.

Gorgeous name! I wished I was called Dorabella when I was a child, instead of my super 70s boring name that loads of other girls had too...

Mimilamore · 21/04/2023 18:37

Love Dora, don't get put off by name bullies x

Mimilamore · 21/04/2023 18:38

Dorabella... lovely, won't get 12 others in the class x

Dorothy is nice, Dorathy is awful

Isadora. But Dora is lovely. Name your child what you want and don’t over think it. It’s not similar to Isabelle. And it doesn’t matter anyway, especially if you will call her Dora.

Alas he doesn't like Dorabella because of the Bella part.

But this is much closer. DH want a name that people haven't heard of before.

If you want a name that people haven’t heard of before then you really need to make one up or go with something very unusual.

That is not a reasonable criterion.

cottinger · 21/04/2023 19:10

Dorabella would be unusual enough for him, he just has bad memories of a Bella from childhood
