Dora variants

I love Dora but DH wants an unusual name and has agreed we can have a longer version of Dora but has ruled out Dorathy, Dorothea, and Theodora.

What possible variants are there are Dora which are more unique?

I love Adora (does it sound like Andora?) and I also saw Apollidora but its a but of a mouthful and I don't like the nn Polly.

I would preferably like the name to start Dora... rather than end in it just so Dora is an obvious nn but am open minded. Any ideas?

Dolores is another one

what do you think of Dorasie and Doralise?

I have a self-imposed rule that I try really hard not to be rude about individual names on this board, so I will only say that I have not seen a single name on this thread that is nicer than the beautiful and unusual names Dora, Dorothea, or Theodora.

JumpToRecipe · 22/04/2023 18:14

I don’t often stray onto the name boards but I’ve just read this whole thread.

OP, this is meant kindly: I promise that you will look back in ten years and wonder why on earth you twisted yourself in knots trying to make up a name to pass muster with your DH, to the extent that you genuinely considered naming your precious baby girl Dorasie.

They both sound like you’re trying to hard. Dorasie makes me think of pleurisy.

Oh this reminds me of something - many many years ago I named my pet cat Adoria, a name I thought I'd heard in song lyrics and thought was beautiful. But it turned out I had misheard the lyrics, which were actually "her diary" and I never realised for quite a few years after.

Still think Adoria is beautiful though!

Other suggestions - Deborah with nickname Dora. Or Dolores

Op. I wanted a certain shortening of a name for my now 6yo. We were determined he should have a longer, 'proper' name. He has NEVER been called the full name. It doesn't suit him and I don't know what we were thinking not just naming him the shortened name (which is a name in its own right!) He doesn't believe us that the full name is even is his name. We're now changing it officially because what's the point?!

NBLarsen · 23/04/2023 09:45

@DemBonesDemBones If you change his name now, every time he fills in a form that asks whether he has been known by any other name he will have to declare the original name anyway! So is it really worth the hassle, given that you've been happily using the shortened version for six years?

OP, from a close friend's experience I urge you in the strongest possible terms not to change the name legally simply because you aren't using the longer form. For one thing, six years old is not old enough to decide whether he will want to use it in the future. You have no idea if it will 'suit' him as an adult. Secondly, he will have to produce the deed poll every time he applies for a passport, or a driving licence, or a DBS. It is an absolute pain and slows down the admin of almost everything.

Sorry, you're not the OP and I cross-posted with @NBLarsen. The other stuff still applies though!

@ZoyaTheDestroyer he has quite severe disabilities and it's unlikely he'll be able to do those things unassisted but I am really surprised that's the case. My Daughter changed her surname by deedpoll when she was 7 and she's never had to provide proof of that with passport applications etc. I obviously need to research it a bit more.
