Opinions on the name Kaelan for a boy?

Ugh, chav central. There are two of them at my grandson’s school, both ghastly kkids from really rough families.

I'm not British so can someone explain what's so 'chavy' about this name? I'm just curious

I imagine for most mocking it it comes under Kayden, Jayden names for them as it is quite similar.

I quite like it but I’d spell with a “c” instead of the “k”. I’d also look at the more traditional spellings of Irish and Scottish names like some have mentioned which have similar sounds.

KirstenBlest · 15/04/2023 12:59

Cai is an old Welsh name, from Caius. It's popular and not 'chavvy'.

MN rules is that if you want to use a name that it from a culture you aren't or are only very loosely connected with, it will either be perfectly ok to do so, or the name will be unpronounceable/unspellable/chavvy.
Which one will depend on whether or not people like the look of the name.

Eira, Nia, Ciara, Ciaran, Osian, Fionn etc perfectly OK even though your connection with Wales/Ireland is that you once had a half of guinness or your grandma's 2nd husband grew leeks
Cai, Caelan, Maldwyn, Efa, Eifion not ok

DramaAlpaca · 15/04/2023 13:03

It's better with the spelling Caolan, pronounced KEE-lun. I'm in Ireland and I know a lovely one, he goes by Cal mostly.

GBoucher · 15/04/2023 13:14

You're not the poster who recently asked about Kyran are you??

Hedwigharlot · 15/04/2023 14:33

Caolfhionn (pronounced Keelan) is an Irish name. It means slender and fair and is a girl's name.

Literally that it’s a more popular choice among working-class parents and not popular with middle-class ones.

that’s it.

There seem to be quite a few rugby players called Kaelan / Caelan / Caolán, so that's my main association - which isn't a bad one at all. I'd spell it with a C though.

Yup, Caelan Doris.

ExpatInSlavikLand · 15/04/2023 20:28

Firstly, it's awful, sorry.

Secondly, yes, I've already read the comments saying the name is Irish, however unless you're Irish yourself/husband is it'd mildly appropriative to give it as a name to your son, and unless you're actually living in Ireland there'll be very few people who'll pronounce it correctly and even fewer who'll spell it correctly.

Judgyjudgy · 15/04/2023 04:07

Love it. This is the wrong place to ask. Unless it's a boring old man name that everyone else has, it's "made up" or "chavvy". I know a Kaelin, lovely lad. I don't think it's made up, but I'm not sure. Surely at some point all names were made up?? British snobbery at its best 😑

It might help to know that calling snobby people ‘snobby’ is not the take down you think it is. People who are snobby are generally entirely OK with it, and own it.

What intrigues me is that you’re pointing this out cos you know exactly what she means.

tokka · 15/04/2023 22:40

Bit chavvy.

UnsureSchool32 · 15/04/2023 22:44

don’t chavs know the names they choose are chavvy?

Alwayswonderedwhy · 15/04/2023 22:46

It sound made up. I know it's a real name but I think it'll be seen in the same way as Kaiden, Brayden, Kai etc. I wouldn't burden a child with anything that gives a negative image.

Marchsnowstorms · 15/04/2023 22:47

I know several Kyeon, keeyan, kynen, and different spellings & variations.,
Nice kids but defo a name associated with rougher parts of town

Quite simply, those who have called it chavvy are ignorant.

It's an Irish name, and therefore unfamiliar, plus the OP spells it with a K, which is Completely Unacceptable

Marchsnowstorms · 15/04/2023 23:09

Yes Caelon is Irish but there are loads of versions now

Dotcheck · 15/04/2023 23:15

Not ‘chavvy’, not American’, not a girls name.

Honestly, unless people are debating the names George or Walter, they get completely slammed. Ridiculous

MaJolie · 15/04/2023 19:17

Yup, Caelan Doris.

It's going to be very popular after September.

RicherThanYews · 16/04/2023 00:18

Kahlan is an important character from The Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind. I'm Welsh and I know two of them, one is named after the book character but unsure of the second.
It's very low class to scoff at peoples names because you find them chavvy.

CallieQ · 16/04/2023 00:41

Nooooooo

Ellsxox · 16/04/2023 16:30

Sounds American/made up to me. It gives Teen Mom vibes tbh. Kaelan sounds like a name that a chavvy unsophisticated mother would give her child, sorry
