Opinions on the name Kaelan for a boy?

Apologies, I feel bad about my Klingon comment. I was being flippant; I'm sorry.

It's actually a nice name. I don't think, in real life, it would attract any of the comments you've had here.

SemperIdem · 13/04/2023 23:40

I know of one, spelt Caelan. It’s a Scottish name, I believe?

resm · 14/04/2023 22:35

The Caolán spelling is very popular in my son’s year group (6 year olds) with multiples in the class. Pronunciation varies between Cail-in and Cee-lin with the ones I’ve met.

miniaturepixieonacid · 15/04/2023 02:17

I think it's pretty. Has a slightly feminine sound to my ear but that might be because I watch too much American TV (there seemsto be a U.S. trend for taking Celtic boys' or last names and making them girls' names).

Agree that the C spelling looks softer and more British/Irish (realise you may well not be British of course!)

CastleTower · 15/04/2023 03:35

There seem to be quite a few rugby players called Kaelan / Caelan / Caolán, so that's my main association - which isn't a bad one at all. I'd spell it with a C though.

moleeye · 15/04/2023 03:52

Sounds made up and looks like it's spelt wrong 😂

TiedUpWithABlackVelvetBand · 15/04/2023 03:58

I’m assuming it’s an Irish name and meant to be spelt with a C given there’s no K in the Irish alphabet…..?

Judgyjudgy · 15/04/2023 04:07

Love it. This is the wrong place to ask. Unless it's a boring old man name that everyone else has, it's "made up" or "chavvy". I know a Kaelin, lovely lad. I don't think it's made up, but I'm not sure. Surely at some point all names were made up?? British snobbery at its best 😑

Lol it's not snobbery. It's an awful name. It sounds like a made up name from the US.

Mercurial123 · 15/04/2023 05:51

Unlikely to meet anyone with the same name though

Kaelan
SpringIntoChaos · 15/04/2023 06:21

I have a Khalen in my class. With the 'Kh' spelling. I don't like the name at all (however you spell it!). Lifetime of misspelling ahead 🤷‍♀️

BattleofBeamfleot · 15/04/2023 06:41

It's definitely not an Irish name, we have a grammar rule about using E before a consonant in that way and as someone else pointed out, no K in the alphabet.

It would need to be spelled with an O so Caolán potentially yes, but this would be pronounced Kway-LAWN or Kay-LAWN.

I am Irish and think Kaelan looks chavvy. Sorry. Caelan might be fine but I guess it might be Welsh or Scots?

CastleTower · 15/04/2023 06:44

I think Caelan is a reasonably common anglicisation. There's definitely at least one guy on the Irish rugby team called that.

UseOfWeapons · 15/04/2023 07:15

Nope.

You literally just proved my point.

anna2101 · 15/04/2023 07:31

I'm not British so can someone explain what's so 'chavy' about this name? I'm just curious

Thanks, I'll say it again it's awful.

ClassicLib · 15/04/2023 08:10

Another vote for made-up & chavvy, I’m afraid.

Blip · 15/04/2023 09:04

K-Len might work better

Not Welsh, there’s no K in the Welsh alphabet

Mummyeyes · 15/04/2023 11:05

It's a nice-sounding name, easy to read. If I was told it without seeing it I would spell it Caolan. Kaelan spelling is good though, looks sensible.
The name may be from Caolán or I would guess it may be from the surname Mac Chaoláin or Mac Fhaoláin.

Cailean is a Scottish name, but it's pronounced to rhyme with Allen

Caramac555 · 15/04/2023 12:07

Reminds me of kaolin, like kaolin and morphine, which was used to treat the runs.

MagpiePi · 15/04/2023 12:19

My first thought was Dr Who alien name.

lljkk · 15/04/2023 12:51
