Girl name is set.
Boy name please help me and DP to settle on either Francis or Franklin
I prefer the classic Francis but DP put off by ‘wet’ comments. DP prefers Franklin but I think it is very surnamey.
We want the nn Frank/ie so it will be one of these names but please help us

@BevMarsh "Prefer Franklin.
I'm sorry but Francis sounds feminine to me."
Can't have that, can we?

GBoucher · 13/04/2023 05:43

Francis of course. Isn't Franklin a surname?? Never heard of anyone with Franklin as a Christian name/given name.

Aerosarethebest · 13/04/2023 06:06

I like Franklin.

PurBal · 13/04/2023 06:17

Francis is the better name, classic. Franklin is awful (sorry). Go with Frank.

potatowhale · 13/04/2023 06:18

Your DH needs to give his head a wobble. Why is he worried about "wet" comments? Ridiculous. If he's going to be so silly about it you better decide which one you prefer and go for that.

potatowhale · 13/04/2023 06:19

Anyway I'd personally go Francis as Franklin is just Franklin D Roosevelt in my mind.

Campervangirl · 13/04/2023 06:24

I prefer Franklin, Francis is an old person's name

KatieKline · 13/04/2023 06:24

Another vote for Francis

BubziOwl · 13/04/2023 06:35

Definitely Francis. A much more timeless name. I find the "wet" comments very odd. I went to school with a Francis who went by Francis, not Frank or any other nickname, and he didn't get any grief for it. I've never even come across the sentiment that it's a "wet" name until I saw mumsnet threads about it - it's just one of those things people on here have latched onto.

Hairdryer12 · 13/04/2023 06:45

Francis!

Hazelnuttella · 13/04/2023 06:48

I much prefer Frank as a stand-alone name to either of the longer options. I know a toddler Frank.

You can still call him Frankie as a nick name.

DigbyTheDigger · 13/04/2023 07:25

A friend of mine had this dilemma and went with Francis, using Frankie on a day to day basis. Her DS is a good advert for the name, he’s lovely.

The ‘wet’ thing isn’t about being cautious or kind, for me it’s more chinless, whiny and feeble. Same as Rupert and Tristan.

baddecisions11 · 13/04/2023 07:28

Sorry OP I don't like Francis at all. It is incredibly feminine. I agree just go with frank if that's the name you love.

Carsarelife · 13/04/2023 07:37

Francis sounds feminine to me. I had a friend Frances years ago. I'd be inclined to just call him Frankie/Frank. Frank is a great stand alone name

What? You think Francis is feminine because you had a friend called Frances? Yes, Frances is the feminine version of Francis. But most names have male/female versions. Joseph/Josephine, George/Georgina, Robert/Roberta, William/Wilhelmina, Henry/Henrietta, Daniel/Daniela, Alexander/Alexandra, etc. Do you find all of these names feminine too?

DelphiniumBlue · 13/04/2023 07:58

I agree, Franklin is a surname.
But you don't have to choose either, you could just have Frank.

itssquidstella · 13/04/2023 08:08

Francis for sure.

CantWait01 · 13/04/2023 08:15

There’s a little hamster on Instagram that my dc follow that is called Franklin. Cute on a hamster but I prefer Francis. The teenage Francis I know is known as Frankie.

MightyPotat00 · 13/04/2023 08:16

Personally the "cis" sound on the end of Francis just makes me shudder. It's like my moist.

Franklin sounds a bit hipster and slightly tongue twister at the end but inoffensive.

I'd probably just call him Frank and then you can use Frankie. Frank sounds solid and classic.

I've heard boys and girls called Frankie. The girls version is Frances I believe so more similar to Francis if you care about that?

RideACockHorseToSunburyCross · 13/04/2023 08:48

Franco

LulooLemon · 13/04/2023 08:54

Francis is a great classic name.

Franklin sounds like a surname. Is a good name for a pet, a toy or a plant.

Jayneisagirlsname · 13/04/2023 09:01

I taught a little Franklin about 20 years ago and he was one of the loveliest children I've ever known, so I love that name!

racquel86 · 13/04/2023 09:04

Francis definitely I say

DemBonesDemBones · 13/04/2023 09:05

I don't really like either (though Franklin marginally better) Francesco?

SittingOnTheChair · 13/04/2023 09:16

Franklin.

But if you can't agree just go for Frankie.
