I LOVE the name Wallace but worried the whole "where's wally" will get too much

Opinions please

It’s fine. I like it. I also like Walter.

I know three young men called Wallace.
They get called Wal. I haven't heard them called Wally.

I think wheres wally and using wally to mean silly has had its day. My son has one wheres wally book but it held only a short passing interest to him. In the 90s this may have been a thing but I don't think it's likely now.

Have you ever counted how many Wally's there are in a primary school on World Book Day? It definitely has NOT 'had its day' 🤣

For context...this year I had 7 in my Year 2 class...overall in school there were probably over 30 🤷‍♀️

OP...please do not saddle a human baby with this name. It's simply awful!!

loislovesstewie · 04/04/2023 08:24

No, I can imagine a lot of awful teasing about the name.

GunpowderSmoke · 04/04/2023 08:33

Gorgeous name. I love it for a girl as well.

AgathaX · 04/04/2023 08:42

Any other names you like? I wouldn't go for Wallace.

SpookyBlackCat · 04/04/2023 08:48

You could always call him Waz for short! 😂

My son’s school is obsessed with where’s wally

Def not ‘had its day’

loononastick · 04/04/2023 11:27

It's a lovely name but kids will be cruel to him...

WheelsUp · 04/04/2023 11:33

A local primary did a whole school "Where's Wally?" dress up for World Book Day.

I think Gromit is as likely as Wally. I don't hear calling people a Wally very often these days.

Honestly not seen any where’s Wally at school book day for our primary (which is surprising as it’s one of the ‘easy’ costumes!) But we live in quite a multicultural area where many of the pupils parents grew up elsewhere, I imagine the children are aware of the books but perhaps it hasn’t had quite the nostalgic legacy at our school, appreciate this could be different in others.

ourflagmeansdeath · 04/04/2023 19:30

If you love it, go for it. It'll be fine. It's not a name to my taste, but he won't be a Wally unless you call him that.

ClaraThePigeon · 04/04/2023 19:31

More cheese, Gromit definitely comes to mind,

UrsulaBelle · 04/04/2023 23:32

I do know a Wallis if that would help prevent the Gromit jokes?

worried4698643 · 05/04/2023 06:59

He might get lucky and be called Ace instead of Wally. Highly doubt it thou

Bienemajas · 05/04/2023 15:31

Wally is much better than Willy!!

Enko · 05/04/2023 18:56

I like it and IMO Nicknames only happen if parents invite it and the child later on does.

2 of mine have names others were certain would be shortened they are both in their 20s and it has never been shortened.

I actually disagree with this. I've seen plenty of kids end up with all manner of nicknames whether they like it or not. Especially when they hit secondary school.

My dd1 is Phoebe whenever people tried Pheebs with her she simply said." Please don't call me that I don't like it." If they tried again she didn't respond. They got no reaction and then stopped.

Because she didn't respond the nm didn't stick. So like I said if it's not invited then you can avoid it.

Problem is too many do not say "don't call me that" because they don't feel strong enough too. Or feel it's impolite. Really then impolite person is the one using a nm the other doesn't like

I guess we will have to disagree.

FrenchandSaunders · 06/04/2023 08:01

Oh!! If he turns out to be a super cool teen then it could work …. if not then life could be brutal.

ididntwanttodoit · 06/04/2023 17:05

Wallace is a fine name, and if he's nn'ed ally, so what? Better than ... speccie/fatso/greaseball/plook/and a million other horrible nns that boys might or might not potentially come up with

Bienemajas · 06/04/2023 17:30

Williams don't appear to mind being called Willy?! I can't see Wally as any worse.

GenAndWine · 06/04/2023 18:56

I think it’s very cool. I’d put it on my list but I am done having babies.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 06/04/2023 19:03

& Grommet

DedicatedFollowerOfFashion84 · 06/04/2023 19:08

I’d jump straight to Wallace and Gromit. Amy abbreviation of Wallace would be preferable to the name itself.
