I love the name Cove, but does it suit a girl or a boy?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
GlassBunion · 29/03/2023 12:02

Peninsula sounds better for a girl.

Headland would suit a boy.

FetlocksBlowing · 29/03/2023 12:17

Even Clove would be better.

Cove makes me think of the old, uncensored Enid Blyton stories, with a shifty looking cove hanging around up to no good!

EmpressaurusOfCats · 29/03/2023 12:19

Clove would come with Garlic as a ready made nickname.

PurpleAirGuitar · 29/03/2023 12:23

I've never heard this used as a name before. I think I would probably assume boy, but be prepared to be surprised.

Twoinapod · 29/03/2023 12:40

At a push I’d say girl, but it’s also a derogatory description of a promiscuous woman. Not a name I’d want to be given

@Hb@Hbh17@Hbh17@Hbh17
It isn't a name at all - for either sex.

Oh god, for one awful minute I thought "cove" is yet another new sex act or position you kids invented and I've missed out on.

2bazookas · 29/03/2023 12:54

At Moongazyhare
No more suited as the name of a person than ‘colander’

In a future life I might call my triplets Colander, Pomander and Salamander.

Squid3 · 29/03/2023 12:54

Please don't do that to your kid they deserve an actual name.

2bazookas · 29/03/2023 12:57

‘Sly cove’ or ‘awkward cove’ is very Jeeves & Wooster.

Are you getting mixed up with Slithy Toves? All mimsy were the borogoves.

HowardKirksConscience · 29/03/2023 12:59

Cove is an area of Farnborough, Hampshire. I can’t see anyone wanting to name their child Cove after visiting it.

Mercurial123 · 29/03/2023 13:07

It sounds made up.

Name of a geographical feature. Not a name for a human.
Why this obsession on MN for weird names? Your child has to live with the 'unique' name.

I agree. If you're giving your child a "unique " name then also have a sensible middle name so they could use that when older.

AlwaysLatte · 29/03/2023 13:09

It's a bay's name.

No.

midlander79 · 29/03/2023 13:45

It's the name of a particularly horrific (and unfortunately true) film/documentary made about the treatment of dolphins by certain humans.

pomegranatelover · 29/03/2023 13:53

I've never heard of it - is it popular where you live? It's just not a name in my community.

MrsMoastyToasty · 29/03/2023 14:01

Kirstie Allsops son is called Bay.

SirChenjins · 29/03/2023 14:07

Cove Bay is the name of a suburb just south of Aberdeen - why not go the whole hog?!

Arapawa · 29/03/2023 14:08

no

myveryownelectrickitten · 29/03/2023 14:21

Pejorative term for a dodgy bloke - “a shady cove” — imagine a shifty type who is probably either a grifter, a cad or doing something probably slightly criminal. Or, obviously, a beach/cliff inlet. It’s not a name! Poor kid who’d be saddled with that!

inappropriateraspberry · 29/03/2023 15:04

@Chersfrozenface don't forget the cousins - Spit, Bank and Bay.

And if you'd intended to call a boy Bay and then had a girl, you could always call her Bae.

Sandysandwich · 29/03/2023 15:33

It doesnt sound much like a name but I would guess girl as it is a "softer" sound and looks similar to some names I have heard on girls or feminine sounding words
Clove
Cleo
Cora
Mauve
Dove

Meandfour · 29/03/2023 15:47

Neither. It’s not a name.

IsaiditwasLighthearted · 29/03/2023 15:55

Agree to me it's a place, not a name. I know things like River and Forrest are sort of accepted now but youre ahead of the sandy beachy curved inlet on this one.
