Help! Costa or Freddie?

Less than 3 weeks left and we don't have a name for baby boy 2. We like Frederick (Freddie), but also considering Constantine (Costa) due to family tradition on my side (Spanish heritage). DS is called Nico. What are your thoughts? Is Freddie too popular? Is Costa a valid option?

Love Emilio!

maddy68 · 28/03/2023 08:42

Freddie ...I absolutely love.

Costa does sound like a coffee
kosta is a Greek version

maddy68 · 28/03/2023 09:23

I live in Spain and since of the nicest names are :
Mateo.
Jorge
Luis
Carlos
Tomas

All which work well in English too

Zola1 · 28/03/2023 09:24

Definitely Freddie
Out of your options, Francis/Frankie is my favourite. Not too old fashioned and plenty of nickname options

Stugs · 28/03/2023 09:25

Dd has a friend called Constantine and he's called Tiny and has been from birth!

shoopshoopdedoo · 28/03/2023 09:40

I love Constantine/Costa! Personally, I don't think of coffee - but I have Greek family and know a lovely Kostas and Costas. Freddie is a nice name too, but much more popular (if that bothers you) and I don't think works as well with Nico.

CallieQ · 28/03/2023 09:41

Not Costa!

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 28/03/2023 09:58

My dad is a Costas! Love the name :) But you have to have the S on the end otherwise everyone thinks of the coffee

FayCarew · 28/03/2023 11:41

Costa, but consider how Costa Surname sounds. It might sound like Costa a or a beach resort
Con is a rude word in France, if that's likely to be an issue.
Freddie is ok but a bit popular

FayCarew · 28/03/2023 11:42

Cost a, as in Cost a packet, cost an arm and a leg etc, Costa Brave, Costa Rica

littlemousebigcheese · 28/03/2023 11:59

Freddie is nice but there are 3 in the reception year near me!

aSofaNearYou · 28/03/2023 12:02

Freddie is one of the most common names going and Costa too linked to the coffee chain. Constan is too much of a mouthful. I'd just think of a different Spanish name.

JulieHoney · 28/03/2023 12:04

Costa Living
Costa Coffee
Costa Del Sol

Just no.
Constantin ids nice though.

RuthW · 28/03/2023 12:06

You can't call a child Costa in the UK

IceCreamWithSprinkles · 28/03/2023 12:07

Really dislike Costa, sorry.

Freddie is nice, but Francis, Victor and Emilio are all lovely! Not too old fashioned at all given current naming trends, and Emilio is no more “foreign” than Nico or Costa.

toastofthetown · 28/03/2023 12:10

I much prefer Constantine to Frederick/Freddie, which are dull and overused. I think Costa as a nickname is charming despite the coffee shop, but if you son ends up not liking it, he can easily switch to using the full name or another nickname.

IsaiditwasLighthearted · 28/03/2023 12:11

Emilio is fabulous and goes well with Nico. Anyone who told you it's "too foreign" has either led a very sheltered life or has serious xenophobic tendencies. Don't take their advice. On anything Grin

TheBirdintheCave · 28/03/2023 13:10

Oh Constantine is lovely. I agree with one of the PP above that Costas would be a good diminutive. It was what I originally saw in the title until I realised the 's' was missing.

IsabelleSE19 · 28/03/2023 13:22

Love Emilio. Please not Costa!

Also probably no to a PP's suggestion of Franco as a nn if you have Spanish connections, due to its historical 'sensitivity'.

BatFaceOwl · 28/03/2023 13:25

@useitorlose probably not as the kids together will basically be nicotine..

Spanielsarepainless · 28/03/2023 13:27

Not Costa. Freddie sounds like a puppy. Constantine as a middle name would be lovely. If his name is Frederick, why would you plan on calling him something else? A friend has an Alexander and he is never called anything else.

elliecatt · 28/03/2023 13:27

Costa Coffee Vs Freddie Kruger 🤷🏻‍♀️

Cool story about your friend’s son bro. 👍

TheYearOfSmallThings · 28/03/2023 13:47

Freddie, because Costa isn't a name in the UK, it is a coffee shop chain.

Con or Stan or the full Constantine would be fine. Costas would be mistaken for Kostas and people would be thinking Greek but that wouldn't bother me tbh.

xPaz · 28/03/2023 13:53

Love Freddie, costa coffee for me too.

I like Constantine though.
What about Consti as un apodo for Constantine, or Tino? or Stino? or
Grin Stante! lol. Last one was a joke.
